paid any attention to when young. At that point I started

Don't forget the Chantays. Pipeline was a classic. These kids made their parents proud with this performance on Lawrence Welk. (unbelievably)

And more, Dick Dale and the Deltones. This is stone incredible. It's as if somebody had requested a 'proof of concept' for Rock so Dick Dale got it done.

My wife won't consider me a guitar player until or unless I can do Classical gas. I don't Know where to begin with that song! Went to down load song. I found a thred of learn to play. Without hearing it now(yet), I got an Idea it will take me 2 years to learn. Should I step into the abyss? Apparently, I probably should start with growing fingernails.

With all due respect I think I would just replace the wife!
Seriously if you want to learn it you will spend the amount of time it takes.
I learned it some years back from a tutorial video on youtube.

If I could replace the wife with one that could teach it to me I might. But me asking you(one who knows), could I assume it makes every other song seem simple? Add to that, i would be more inclined to spend the time (and effort) to learn it, and grow the fingernails, but I really don't have to re-string in vinyl do I? Two things I'd rather do first,Buy a third acoustic dedicated to classical, or, replace the wife!

Maybe you should post a tutorial. I might start a tortural!

I used my Takamine dreadnought acoustic (steele string) I learned most of the song in a day. It took me about a week to really be able to do a run through. Thats been 2 years ago and is the kind of song that I would have to run through at least once a week to be proficant at. I learned it to prove to MYSELF I could do it! No need to grow your finger nails and BABY them. I finger picked it like I always finger pick. With the fleshy fingertips!
I was trying to convey to you that as a musician you have to set your goals VERY high if you want to play at that level! Most musicians have songs that are above their current playing ability that they want to learn! They work like heck for YEARS to be able to up their game and rise to the occasion. I have done that many times in my career. I am playing things now I never dreamed I would be able to play 20 years ago. For example, I made up my mind I was going to learn Eruption about 5 years ago. When I play it live it blows peoples minds. However I am not happy with it at all. I pull it off. It sounds like Eddie. In truth I can play that solo at 20 different gigs and I am happy with my performance 2 of those times. So it is a work in progress. I don't care if it takes me 20 years I have made up my mind I am GOING TO DO IT!

I agree with J ...Just make the time and learn the music...
The good news is that you like the song...so you have the inspiration to strive through the workings of the song. (As a non-gigging musician, I refuse to waste time on songs I do not essentially enjoy.)

If I wasn't such a damn lazy -ass... I would have learned that one years ago... Its a beautiful piece of work.

Crunchy...here's an Idea... Learn it... then teach it to me (through a video tutorial that you make).

Your mission... should you decide to accept,... is to learn the song, video tape your tutorial on it...and post NLT than end of March 2012

I base my time line on my experience learning TNs Stranglehold. It was not as easy as 38SPs Hold on Loosely. A technique was mentioned in the thread about hanging the thumb (like a hook). I agree with that method hanging, but not as a hook. I use it as a low E damper. I've used finger picking techniques in songs like Dust in the Wind. I wasn't real bad or good at it, but I havn't lost it. Yes, Paper, you're right about motivation. How long do you play Dust in the wind before wanting to cry yourself. Someone says, "Why are you crying?" I say"I was just playing guitar" they say"Funny, that's why we're crying too!" Then someone stupid with a flare gun... Motivation isn't everything. Support is as much a key, if not just plain tolerance. This may be a song my wife can tolerate me getting through.

Dog, thats the bummer of being in a coverband. You often have to learn songs you don't like. For example I am learning 2 songs right now I don't like. I have found over the years those songs tend to grow on me. Sometimes they end up being signature songs that I become known for. The band was told to learn 2 songs by a very FAMOUS actor that is also a musician for the Vegas gig. They are keeping it very hush hush because of the fame of this person. The company that has hired us always has a very High Profile Key note speaker so I don't doubt this will be the case! Anyhow I am learning the songs (I'll probably only play them this one time) I am gonna kick @ss on them as a pro!
