I've got some pretty sweet news that pales in comparison, obviously, to what a lot of you guys are doing on here, but a friend of mine named Chris and myself are starting a new project.

I just ran into him at the gas station he manages last night when I was out buying some smokes for my wife.

It's pretty interesting as he is a guitarist/bassist, and I pitched him my idea concerning the role I'd like the bass to play in the band, strangely enough, he wants to do it with me, but not as the bassist, as the guitarist!

In any case, he made a phone call and we now have a really good bassist who is familiar with me, though I didn't know her by name or anything.

It's pretty funny because he was talking to her on speaker, and he's like, "Right now, it's just me and a fairly decent singer. You might not have heard of him, but he sang for Barometric Pressure and his name is Pierce -------------."

She repeated my name and said, "Yeah, I've heard of him," and then she paused as she was trying to think of what to say; she didn't know I was listening to the conversation.

I muttered, "Oh, S---," knowing she couldn't hear me.

She continued, "He's not awful. I saw them a few times. He can't hit high screams at all, hopefully he has stopped trying. If he has stopped trying to do that, we might be all right. I'm in."

Just to rub it in, Chris replied, "Yeah, he sounds like a cat being tortured when he tries to do anything on the high end."

In any case, Chris assures me that he is going to handle finding a drummer as he has three-four candidates in mind with significant experience and nothing presently going on. Chris maintains that one of them is better than the rest, but he doesn't know if that guy will be interested because he dislikes me personally, even though I can't remember who he is. He says any of the others will be sufficient, though.

We're going to get started practicing in mid-January, after the holidays are well and over because Chris is married with kids, as am I. Anyway, it'll probably be a few months after that, but I'll post a few crude recordings that we will probably do if I can figure out how you do that.

We plan to be ready to gig in six months practicing an average of 1x/Week, do you guys think that is too optimistic?

I know that my former band practiced a Hell of a lot more than that, but it was nearly a year before we felt confident enough to gig because none of us had any experience at that point.

We are going to also go with the name, "Barometric Pressure," I had previously secured the blessing of my previous bandmates to continue using the name and logo (my ideas in the first place) were I to form another band.

I think that's really cool, if your drummers don't work out I'd be glad to give it a shot. Since it's awhile for you to get going I can get to where I need to be as far as learning your material. I'm committed to practice as much as possible! I don't have a lot of playing live experience, but I am focussed and committed. If anything I can be someone to fill in to help you be able to practice until the other guys can be there 100%. But congrat's on hooking up with your friend, my cell is 832-713-2283 and my name is LEE....

I appreciate that very much, Lee, but you live nearly 2,000 miles away from me, unfortunately.

That's awesome news Pierce! The thing about singing especially if you are young. Get some training from a teacher that knows what they are doing! There are certain exercise's you can do to expand your range. When I was a whippersnapper I could sing most of the notes the singer I am working with now. Singing when I was sick (gigs) damaged my voice over the years. If you get with a teacher they can show you what you need to know to avoid damaging your voice and they can teach you how to expand your range. Good luck Bro.

How could this conversation started if you weren't something to have been said about. Take what you've learned and go with it. Another guy at work popped me a CD of his band. It is FReAKinG great. It has a sound of Red Hot Chilli Peppers but better. I did critique it for him. Told him it was fantastic. Doesn't need remastered. I have a really good stereo in my work truck. I played it all day Saturday. The lead singer is VERY god and as far as my critique, was the only criticism I could front him. The lead singer is good enough to put more into it on a second album.I can't change the format in which I post but you can critique this yourself and I think you might get an inspiration from it.The Lovebenders, crime and poetry. Do yo think the singer should put more into it? thelovebenders.com

Jeff,

Thanks! I definitely could use some (Read: a ton) improvement on my range, and in fact, I know of a vocal coach in the area that specializes in Rock and its many forms. I wasn't going to contact him unless I actually got something started, but my understanding is that he gives a little preference to people with singing experience (not teaching them from scratch) so he'll give you a break on his hourly rate and even go .25-.50/hour over with you and not charge you if it just pans out that way.

I know most of the tricks to protect my voice, I believe, but I'll also consult with him to see if I am missing anything. For instance, I've been pretty religious about drinking two cups of Earl Grey with honey every day, even if I am not singing at all that day, and avoiding acidic drinks/foods. I also drink a shitload of water every day.

I think most of it will be all about range improvement. Maybe I should record a before/after of A-Ha's, "Take on Me," and I would, but someone would have to hear the, "Before," and I wouldn't subject a fellow human being to that.

I'll check that out when I am next on my office computer w/speakers, or my one with speakers at home. Thank you very much. I'll get back to you with my opinion on that.

Very cool,

Good Luck!

Neat story. As for # of practices / week. The more live experience you have under your belt, the less practice you'll need to prepare. I have a few musician friends who on open mic night, huddle up, come up with like 12 songs for the night, and just wing it - and wing it well. But only because they've been playing for so darn long...

So I say it would depend on how experience you all are and how diligent you are with your practice time at home. As many on this forum have said in the past, band-practice isn't for learning songs - it's for polishing them up.

Keep us up to date. This is a neat story unfolding :D

Best 2 u

Thanks for the great posts, everyone!

PaperDog,

It was hilarious! At least you know I'm not an arrogant lead singer!

Jahva,

I don't think she'll claim the band, she only claims me on good days...j/k

Chris,

I'm kind of concerned only about who our drummer ends up being. I have no reservations about Chris, and I asked him what bands the bassist had been in, I eventually told him to stop listing when he got to the tenth one or so. As a singer, I can practice absolutely anywhere by popping in a CD, it's just getting in sync with the band to make sure I'm not late starting or anything that's important.

In any case, I think six months will be enough time, unless we get a drummer with no live experience. Even if we do, that's fine. I haven't been in a band regularly for six years, so I'm not really in a position to get cocky and demand people with live experience.

A good story Pierce. It sounds to me like neither you nor the others are prima donnas - but experienced enough to get it done.

One comment however: it sounds to me like you all could have some magic. You won't get there on one rehearsal per week. It won't maintain the energy. More throttle. You can always cut back later when you have a product.

Good luck.

Talbot,

That's very true, but myself and Chris are quite busy with work and family. I suppose we could always practice some in the early a.m. hours, but the tough thing with that is finding a place to do so. While my garage is a terrific option by day, I don't think my wife would like it at night. Chris and his live in an apartment, so I suppose it depends on whether either of the other BM's have a suitable place for late-night practices.

You're very right, though, that we should certainly rehearse more than that.

Novy,

Thank you for gracing my thread with your post. I don't know how many people on this Forum know of Behemoth, but I am truly not worthy.
