Scary week this past week...

I had some major spikes in blood pressure last week, high 150's to 175. Never felt so dizzy in my life. I went online and started looking up natural remedies then Tuesday went to my naturopath and Wednesday the chiropractor. I'm on a wole new diet, taking a few supplements and was ORDERED to walk 10,000 steps per day. After only three days I have significant improvement, the trick now is to keep it up. Apparently two of the best foods to reduce high blood pressure are celery and beans. No prescription drugs yet. Blood tests next week. A major factor with me is my spine goes out of alignment and I need regular adjustments (6X/year). I'm a jock and played a lot of sports my whole life, it's catching up with me.

Anything pickled. That's what works for me. I don't do the jalapenos much anymore, but if I do I only add them to other pickled items such as olives Oh, yeah! I mix pickles to season to taste. I have had several blood tests done in the past because I worked in heavy metals, no pun intended. All my numbers were in the middle of where they should be. No internal parasite wants to hang on to a jalapeno junkie.

My BP has climbed like that as well... Two words: Sodium and Cholesterol In conjunction with age)

If you are big on eating meat, now is a good time to check for cholesterol (i.e your upcoming blood tests). Lots o folks don't realize the risk of stroke from the bad cholesterol. Typically, it builds up in the arteries as 'soft' plaque. The trouble with soft plaque is that it breaks off as clots (very easily) and causes many of the strokes /Heart attacks associated with bad cholesterol. So they usually prescribe a statin drug. Statins will do two things...They will tell your liver to stop producing the fatty (bad) cholesterol and they will stabilize (harden) the soft plaque already in your system.

If you are showing signs of Edema in your legs (Cardio Vascular issues...hence the walking) , it might be due salt in the diet or Blood sugar issues or both .

I walk @ 30min , twice a day. I do it religiously.
I quit smoking Cold turkey (almost been 2 years now)
I eat a sh*t load more vegetables and fruits
Eating less beef, more fish & Chicken.
I cut back drastically on sweets. (I still eat chocoalte)

Now if I could just lose the weight I gained... I'll be good for another 20 years or so...

Glad you're feeling better Bob. They call HBP the 'silent killer' because so many people don't even know they have it. I went in for a procedure in 1999 and they discovered mine was elevated, I had no idea. They put me on a beta blocker and my reading has been perfect ever since. Exercise, cut down on salt and lose weight are the best things you can do if you're not on medication.

Bob, Im on blood pressure meds myself, take care of yourself, get one of those rigs to check yourself at home.

In my case i never knew it, but was at my moms and she had one of those rigs to check your self, mine was 217 over 120.

I take a pill in the morning and one at night, and its kept mine in the 125 over 85 range.

As I said monitor this closely, as Jimmy said its the silent killer.

You would be surprised where the salt is. It's even in Ice Cream.
My biggest culprit was lunch meat. I Love a big DAGWOOD. All
that sliced lunch meat is packed with salt to preserve. Another
item that is advised to cut out is WHITE BREAD.
Exercise is KING though. You MUST learn to sweat regularly. It is
a natural way for your body to eliminate waste like peeing. Hence
the different smells of sweat. Constant water, sweating regularly,
eliminate most salt, NO white bread, vegies galore and you
probably wont have to take any pills.
Lifestyle Change.

No issues here ... but my wife recently went on medication for hers despite my objections.
I'd certainly prefer she went the natural route as it can cure not just cover up Hypertension for many people.

Fat is a killer. Every pound of extra adipose we carry is like an equivalent of a mile of capillary our heart has to work to perfuse.

Nothing is as dangerous or as sinister as obesity ...

( think I'll go for a long walk today )

Bob, my wife eats beans almost all the time now, for the same reason as you.
My problem is salt - and munchies (potato chips, puffs, Fritos etc).
Those good-tasting munchies are so loaded with grease that you can take a match to one and light it on fire; and it'll stay lit for a whole minute.
No joke; try it; I'm not kidding.
I shudder when I think of what I'm doing to my body by putting that much grease and lard into my system . . .

Don't feel so bad.... My arm just hangs there doing nothing all week and is in immense pain.. Not only that but I hafta go back to work soon and really don't for see me playing my axe much more... So... Whenever you think life is handing you a bowl of sh¡t, try to put yourself in my position!. My surgeon feels that I'm able to still work and won't give me the opportunity to collect disability as of yet! So basically, I have to go through life trying to work my ass off as a left handed , one armed gimp in order to take home a check. This is gonna be one of the most challenging times of my life and I'm in my early 50's. gonna be a tough road ahead of me but I have to earn a paycheck. Only hope I don't destroy my right "titanium" arm as I can't bear to have to endure that operation again! Count your blessings,Bob. I really am scared shitless going to a physical job every single day and not being able to ever play again! :?

Keeping you in my prayers Kerry.
Disability takes a long time to approve, but in your case I could see having a lot of merit.
Then, I have a friend. Born with one arm whom excels at much.
No ... he can't play guitar, but getting school in the cage by a young man with one arm is a humbling experience.
My point being. You a bright and articulate fellow, and there are a lot of ways to earn a living.

I've been fighting hbp since I was rather young. Take the meds every day and walk. I hate taking the meds, they slow me down in many ways but there has been no natural alternative that works for me.

I've heard that silent killer stuff but I can always tell when the BP is up. I get really cranky and sort of freaked out, dizzy. It lets me know pretty quick. Apparently not the case with everyone.

Bob - 217? That is in the stroke zone. I'd be very careful with that. Pills suck but beat having a stroke.

Mike, it was John (jw123) who said he had a 217 BP reading. I heard that one of the health risks of being a rock guitar hero is high blood pressure...

. I can't imagine what you're going through Kerry, but I have this feeling that you're going to have great things happen in your future. You may or may not play music like you did, but in your determination I believe you'll find something new and rewarding you're capable of doing. Hang in there...

Whether you believe in evolution or creation, man has been a WALKING species for the vast majority of our existence. We have the capability of walking longer than almost any other animal without stopping. Early man did everything while walking, hunted, gathered and ate food, explored, migrated, etc. It wasn't until recent history that we've tried to create things to do our work for us, and we're paying the high cost of inactivity with illnesses that could be prevented.
