Spelled Whip-Poor-Will. Bird is named after it's incessant bird call. It's nocturnal, rarely seen, spends most of its time on the ground, rarely seen, often just heard. Has a close relative called Chuck-Wills-Widow, also named after its call. The common Nighthawk is in the same family of birds, often seen flying at dusk as it eats insects on the fly. THe Whip-Poor-Will has one of the loudest voices. If you ever had one in your backyard you'll be amazed how loud it sings. I Believe they mark their territory at night, move around quite often singing from different spots for a few minutes at a time.

Shot one one evening out late when I was a kid.
Was out shooting bats for practice ( yeah, also illegal but I might have been 14 at the time )

Odd looking bird ... beautiful sounds.
