Heard about a new social website, Unthink. I checked it out and it looks interesting. Don't know how it'll last but it looks bereft of advertising. I'm thinking about joining. Not crazy about FB any more.

Bob, Dont let the lack of advertising fool ya... They did the same trick with Cable 30 years ago... Back Then, you'd subscribe and pay the fee...NO COMMERCIALS.. Today, Your fee is quadrupled and there is NOTHING BUT COMMERCIALS.

I have a feeling the website you mentioned will eventually pull the same stunt.

BTW FB aint bad, as long as we don't get emotionally attached to it... 8)

Heck, FB has been boring for a while now, but I still visit ever other day at the least. Bandmix has always been far more stimulating...its good to be back! 8)

Facebook is good for local stuff as far as the band goes I guess.
It helps me keep up with my local musical friends as well as old class mates ETC.

Electronic media is spread thin ... like too little butter on hot toast.

I really can't see an immense value in any of it.

I found a couple of long lost friends on FB. I also have a bunch of people on there I don't even know. Maybe it's time to delete. Still haven't heard from Unthink. Maybe they didn't put enough thought into it.

FB has been a very good tool for my band to drive people to gigs.

Its a lot easier than calling people individually and sometimes a group of them get together and plan some sort of gathering around our gigs. I dont get the negativity toward these social networks, for a band it is too easy to get in touch, I remember plastering windshields with flyers and talking it up for weeks for a gig, these days I send a notice out on FB to around 150 people, ussually get around 80 people respond and come to the shows, not bad, only takes me about 15 minutes to do that.

Just my 2cents

I don't like the commercial aspects of FB. It won't be long before we have to pay to be a FB member. There's other aspects of lack of privacy protection that I don't like about FB. I've heard some bad things about FB.

To me its just a free way to market my band and keep up with family and friends, dont put anything anywhere on the net that you want private is a good rule of thumb, and dont click on links unless you know where you are being directed.

But heck, if you dont like it dont fool with it.

Another year or so there will be another one, anyone remember Myspace, I used it to market our band for 2-3 years and then moved over to FB. I dont even have to get out of my chair.

Rock On

fb is a wonderful way to stay in touch with friends and family, and as a marketing tool it's indispensable. Rumors of them changing to a pay model have existed since its beginning. If you don't fb you probably don't have any friends!

That works the other way too. I have roughly 2400+ "friends" on FB. Of course most of 'em are bull-shit . My real circle is probably 10
