WHAT DO YOU WANT?

What do you want in a song critique?

1) I want to know what you liked
2) what you didn't like
3) if you heard any obvious errors and at what time during the tune specifically.
4) if you think a part of a tune doesn't go with another
5) what s/b louder
6) what s/b more quiet
7) things that one could add to make the tune better
8) things that could make it worse
9) anything that falls under constructive criticism
10) anything that doesn't fall under constructive criticism
11) I wanna know anything you want to say..

When I do a song critique, I say what I think. I don't pull punches. I give the straight "dope on the pope".

In the past, I have really blasted a few but that's what I really thought. I don't give a sh*t review when I don't like the musician. I say what I think because I think it's important and very useful to ask the musicians around you.

I may not like you or your group or your music, but you can rest assured that I gave you exactly what I thought when I listened to the piece in question.

I think the biggest slight is when someone critiques your music and thinks something but doesn't bother to tell you because they think it won't be well-received or whatever the reasoning.

If they ask for it, you owe them by telling them exactly what you thought.

Sometimes it comes off in a mean way but when you say exactly what you think, you really are helping out other musicians in a way that they cannot help themselves.

Furthermore, music is subjective, meaning that people like what they like.
Not everyone is going to like the same thing, so if you get someone that told you something you didn't like, don't take it as a personal attack on your musical character. That's just stupid.

I like to hear thoughts on the actual song.
Opinions on the production and/or performance don't matter to me unless I specifically ask for opinions on them. People will give their thoughts on that stuff anyways, but I ignore it.

Critiquing is really an ugly business...

I could tell you what I liked or didn't like and maybe even say why (if I can define it myself) ..

Me personally, I don't know enough about music, technically to lend a credible statement of professional usefulness... At best, I can conjecture...

I suppose Honesty is always the best policy... Trouble is that if you Ask AC DC to rate Glen Cambell...yikes!

I Think Money is the best form of critique...and it pretty much spells out whether the song was good or not...

Just shoot from the hip, people. Trained or untrained, opinions vary and if someone wanted an expert that's who they would ask, not a forum of widely varied musicians. (Everyone has something to say, productive or otherwise and I think some of the best ideas come from strange places.)

I don't think anyone wants to hear anything you don't really feel anyway.

And otherwise, I like people that find something wrong with whatever you are doing. I don't know that I would agree with what's said, but it's easy enough to dismiss them if you don't feel like they are on target.

You just have to make sure you aren't wearing THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES.

(that wind is enough to freeze ya where ya stand) lol
