I remember Rocky Athas! I used to go see him often! A good guitar player but not to spectacular!
Eric Johnson is the man down here pretty much King of the Hill as far as guitar slingers go. Kirt Mckim is really the next in line IMO. In case you are not familar with Kirt he has been with Pat Travers since about 2000 he is also a GIT grad. All though he doesn't get to shine as much in Travers band he can wail like Steve Via!

Hey you forgot Van Wilks and Billy Gibbons!!
Never heard of the other guy, been out of Texas for a while, but Bugs Henderson is great. Only heard him a few times, but was quite impressed..
Van Wilks is an old favorite of mine, been around for a long time and opened for ZZ Top in the 70's. Great guitar player, don't miss Van if he comes to Houston, Haley. I'm sure you'll like what you hear...I used to drive from San Antonio to Austin to see Van on a regular basis, wouldn't make that drive for most other bands. Except, of course, ZZ Top, Eric Johnson, Joe Walsh, Pink Floyd...well, you get the idea...

Used to go see Buggs about every other month ( late 70's early 80's ) in a local dive called THE FALCON & THE CROW
He played down town here about a month ago.
I missed the show but Eric said he's still rockin though he cleaned up his lyrical content some for the fogies.
Apparently Eric has sat in with him some in the past.

King of the Texas hill these days is Andy Timmons. IMO, Eric Johnson is the best after that (of rock guitarists)
Though I haven't been in a Texas bar for quite a while, I'm sure Bugs is still plugging away. Has to pay the bills....
Rocky too...last i heard he was doing a band with Glenn Hughes (Trapeze, Deep Purple) but that was f ew years back.

Andy has been performing at Hertlein guitars as of late - I got to see him live a few weeks ago and recorded part of the performance on my iphone. The first part of this 6 minute video is him talking, the second half one of his songs. He's a great performer.

Johnny and Edgar are from my hometown, Beaumont. They left a long time ago. Johnny is in NYC and Edgar in Malibu. Derringer is from Shreveport Louisianna.
Willie is a good guitarist but would rank low among all the talent we have in Texas growing on trees...

Daniel Johnston, Roky Erikson, ZZ Top, and the Butthole Surfers are ALWAYS hot in Texas.
