My mother just called and told me about it, both of my brothers live near Richmond. Both are OK.
So I called our friend Philbymon, who lives in West Virginia about an hour from DC. He felt it but he's OK too. We talked for a few minutes, his computer died recently so he can't get online right now. He's still in rough shape after his divorce, looking for a job and not finding much, but surviving. The quake shook things around some but apparently didn't do much damage in his area and he's fine.
I intended to start a thread about it but found this one already posted so I put a post in to let everyone know Philby is OK.

Y'all might want to check your homeowners insurance. If you don't have an earthquake rider and you do suffer damage you're SOL. An earthquake rider is dirt cheap.

I live in Louisa VA.
I had some minor damage but our town and neighboring town
had more serious problems. There is a Nuclear Reactor a short
distance from all of us here. That could have been more than serious.
Now we have a Hurricane to look forward to.

If you look at Virginia's history, there's never been one over 5.9. The last one was in 1897. Hopefully, this will be the end of it.
Dude, I was hearing where people were evacuating buildings and running outside. That's the last thing you should do unless you think that sucker will collapse. But most modern buildings and high rises are pretty sturdy, and it's easier just to get under your desk and wait it out. Running outside runs the risk of getting hit by falling debris. Glass shoots in all different directions.
As far as being home, find out where your gas lines are located and how to turn it off (usually with a crowbar). If you smell gas, turn it off. If you're needle on your meter is spinning or jumping around, turn it off. You have to call the gas company to have someone turn it back on, so if you don't smell anything, you're probably safe. I'm part of the first response team at my job, so we get refreshers every six months, plus a live drill every October.

JUST IN.: President Obama has just confirmed that the earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as "Bush's Fault". Obama also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake's suspicious ties to the Tea Party. Conservatives however have proven that it was caused by the founding fathers, buried nearby, rolling over in their graves. Video at 9:00pm

I have a friend living in VA - she's from Cali and lived in the same apartment complex as me during the Loma earthquake in '89- she said the news was abuzz - this blog entry went viral and sums it up nicely.
