The Europeans have been using rods like that for many years. The B 'n M Crappie poles are quite long, not 40 foot, but half that length. If Crappie are down in a sunken tree or man-made attractor it's hard to get a bait down to them without hanging up. A very long rod allows a straight drop. When a fish hits you lift it straight up and then drag it across the top of the water. Those skinny slip bobbers are awesome. I use crappie jigs with them. I cast them quite far and let the jig sink until it is just off the bottom. I've caught numerous fish that I would never even feel without the slip bobber.
