My Bob Dylan epiphany: I have considered myself a singer since the age of 14. When I heard Bob sing in the 60s, I thought, what's a terrible singer like him doing on the air? We'll folks about 5 years ago: I got it. Bob sings with such incredibe feel, that most listeners just hear that. About 2 years ago Bob was voted as one of the top 10 singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and I once again, I got it.So before the above epiphany occured, I would teach technique and leave it at that. Now I teach that feel is King and technique is Queen. We find that when a singer is internally thinking, "am I on pitch, will I be able to hit the high note at the end of the song, etc. Their is no or little feel. Please stay tuned!

If its all about the feel, and if Dylan pulled it off, then whu would somebody need voice lessons?...unless they were just flat tone def...in which case, couls that even be helped...?

Bob Dylan epiphany:

Still waiting for mine, concerning Bob's singing. Now his song writing is another matter. I understand that part.

I much prefer other artists' versions of Dylan's tunes precisely because he can't sing well IMO.

So, what I think we can all learn from artists ala Bob is: that to sing successfully from feeling, we must first, memorize, memorize, memorize, pay our dues and never think of any thing but the lyric or story we are feeling. And the best part, is that it all comes from our internal drive and desire to enjoy music and art. If we are forced to sing or play, it will not be art.

first I like Bob Dylan, but thinking he sings from feel, I dont know, I always wanted to hear him push a little harder

Like Bob says most of the people who cover Dylans songs in my mind move them up a notch in feel

But to each his own, but still I like Bobs vocal style, cause its so easy to cover, without feeling

Bless you for taking a few minutes to publish this. I understand where you are coming from on this article however , I do believe that there are more desirable solutions like sticking a gerbil up my ass while licking a poison dart frog!

Hearing someone realize that feel is the way for a singer to be good is like hearing that someone realized that racism is wrong. Really? You are just now getting this?

Few singers are more repulsive than Dylan. The only way I could know his songs were good is if someone else sang them.

It's like someone handing you a slice of key lime pie that had the sugar replaced with salt. It would be good if you could just get past the salt. Well I personally am blinded by the salt, by his voice. It's far too repulsive to get past.

But if a singer sings off key no amount of feel will compensate. Both are critical.

I agree Paul but the redeeming part of Dylan's singing are his lyrics. They are true poetry, and it's almost like he's saying "yeah I suck as a singer but look at my words".

I know this but there is too much salt to taste the words. All along the watchtower is great. If I had heard Dylan's first I would have never known. I heard the indigo girls version of Romeo and Juliette first and was blown away. Heard Dylan's and wanted to hurl. I don't even know what other great songs he's written that were covered by other artists.

Enlighten me.

Too true and yet horribly interesting.

It's like one is unable to look away from the oncoming train wreck about to happen, you want to walk away and yet it compels one to look.

What are the more desirable solutions?
