Well, some of us actually want to be working musicians and, well, many of the bands advocated by the OP didn't do a lot of music you can dance to. Malmsteen; in particular, nobody cares. Really. Nobody.

Whitesnake has a couple of songs you could get away with. Sabbath will make both of the people in the bar old enough to remember them happy while the bar is clearing out (people leaving to go the place a few doors down playing music people can dance to).

Allmans, Steppenwolf, Credence; they all have songs you can dance to and that people really do want to hear.

Personally, I'd love to play some songs by Black Sabbath, in particular. I could do all Led Zeppelin radio and be a happy camper. Of course, my band would never get hired...

I've outlined before the respect I have for musicians whom can do covers really well. So this is not for me a part of the issue.
If you really want to " work " in my area you have to play countree music. That is just not my thang.

I'd rather do six or eight gigs a year and play my own music personally.

And I like to play it loud and heavy ...

what`s cool about our music and genration is that for the first time ever our kids like the music that we grew up on.it`s kind of us liking our folks music, swing or is that schwing.any way how many times have you gone to a concert and see kids wearing zep, sabb, purple, maiden t-shirts.they like our music we`ve ccnnected.and as for the guy that said malmsteen who cares, future schredders care, stay hungry my friends.

Sabb, malmsteen, van halen,whitesnake,etc...hard? HARD? Are you F*CKING KIDDING ME? LOL!

I don't know what some people's problem is, who stop liking certain music when they get older. Personally, I like to broaden my tastes, not change completely. I knew I was becoming bored and jaded with hard music when I fell asleep at a Brutal Truth show! But, I still like them. I like them AND other things. When I got into noise, it occurred to me that there was nowhere left for music to go. How can you get more intense than hours of pure noise? You can't. Appreciation for softer music then becomes inevitable. Throbbing Gristle discovered this early on and opened their shows with Martin Denny and Les Baxter records.

I think it's a good thing that successive generations are into older music. Maybe, God forbid, it will lead to better parenting. But, more likely, it will expose a parent's hypocrisy. "Do as I say, not as I do." It's comical that the Sex Pistols are sort of considered "quaint" now.
