I bought a ticket to Juneau Alaska yesterday. My brother lives there
and I will be commercial salmon fishing with him near Elfin Cove
for 2 weeks. This will be a trip of a lifetime for me on the edge of the Gulf of Alaska.

I have visited him there before but have never gone into commercial
fishing waters. We will find time for crabbing and Halibut fishing also.
Occasionally a deer can be had from the boat on the shore line as they
come to the waters edge to eat kelp.[/b]

Oh, man! That is RICH! Snag me a few crab, eh? This sounds like the trip of a lifetime! (Avoid the Palins at all cost - that woman might mistake you for a wolf or a deer pr a bear or a moose, or a liberal!)

My friend went up there two years ago and came back with a bunch of salmon they caught. They had a guy smoke it for them. Oh man, that was the best salmon I'd ever tasted!!!!!!

Watch out for earthquakes, they have fault lines up there. :lol:

Not only do bears like salmon but they are among the most cunning predators on planet Earth. Their sense of smell is many times greater than a dog. They can run 40 mph. They stalk and hunt prey on land virtually in silence. If you go on shore in bear country you are potential prey. Make sure you are heavily armed and ideally TWO of you go on shore so you can watch each other's back...

The deer are not afraid of anything in the water so you can sit off shore
and wait on them to come for the kelp then shoot them. Take the dingy to shore with the winch line, hook him up then return to the boat. Winch him in and up to the winch boom. He is hanging up so dress him and shove it all off
the back of the boat. Normally the winch is used to haul pots off the
bottom but it comes in handy for this. This method minimizes the
bear risk.[/b]

I spent 2 weeks in Alaska in 2008. Loved it! My brother got a really good shot of Humpback whales using bubble rings to corral baitfish:

No doubt! When my brother got that shot he was on an 80' trawler, my wife and I were out in kayaks :shock:

Good thing we weren't inside the bubble ring.
