I'm not bewailing the plight of the prisoners, Glen. I'm saying that there are no jobs in that field...prolly because they have ppl doing it for 23 cents an hour, already...but I'm so sure that our fine administration will include these positions in their numbers to "prove" that the economy is on the upswing!

The German concentration camp prisoners also were used to manufacture weapons. Many of those weapons were intentionally made to be duds. Perhaps we want the Arabs to buy American weapons that are duds...Kind of like us buying products from China that are defective...

23 cents an hour, many of them failed to file tax returns. The IRS is seeking prison terms for the offenders. Workers Comp is seeking payment in various states.

Without any tax shelters the average prison worker could end up owing hundreds of thousands dollars in interest and penalties.

IRS agents have complained about the working conditions in pursuit of these cases, rumors of unionization abound. The treasury dept has expressed delight ,that when this is all locked up they will be able to issue some more funny money.

There is a wonderful book called "The Bloody Battle for Tilly" where a Brit soldier notes how he and his mates all prayed for the Czech workers who'd manufactured the German shells that hit their position dead on - but didn't explode.

The dumb nazis even used concentration camp prisoners to manufacture V-weapons - meaning many of their missiles went haywire.

So prisoners should pick lettuce and strawberries? No thanks, just leave them in jail. Illegal aliens are preferable to criminals.

Prison labor is like slavery. By that I mean, it totally skews the labor market. Before the civil war, part of the reason the South supported slavery was it meant that wages could be suppressed, workplace conditions were abysmal, and workers had to just suck it up and accept it (lest the bossman buy a few negroes to replace them).

Well, before they started taking our jobs away from us, they did work for the state. They made license plates. They did road work. Now they are used to subsidize corporate profits doing just about anything the private sector does without setting them free.

I only wish our government was half as efficient.

Yes, bad decisions brought on by shortages, especially late in the war.

But the German war machine of the 30's & 40's was an amazingly effective thing, like not many that have ever existed.

Although the Nazis ran the most efficient government, probably in human history, they were as close to evil incarnate as any society ever became. That efficiency came at a cost of their souls.
