The rumor mill has been churning for months, but it appears Van Halen are heading into the studio to record a new studio album with Grammy-winning producer John Shanks (Bon Jovi, Keith Urban, Pink, Celine Dion).

Melodicrock.com is reporting the band will be joined in the studio by original frontman David Lee Roth for their first new studio album since 1998’s Van Halen III. It will be Roth’s first new album with Eddie and Alex since 1983’s 1984.

There is no word about a completion date for the album nor any subsequent tour, though Melodicrock.com reports that Eddie is not interested in touring without new music in his quiver. It is also reporting that the band’s Warner label might want to release a career-spanning box set after reaching new publishing deals with Roth, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony.

Eddie is a genius! His equipment is just as legendary as his playing.

I would be the first to hit the store if VH released another album. With that said,I hope it's good old fashioned VH. I would hate to see the band screw up towards the finish line of their career. Roth's voice kinda worries me. :?

I think Van Hagar already did that. Dave lost his mojo years ago too. Maybe they can rescue their reputations with a good album. Who knows?

I wonder how many songs they'll get through before they have such a fight they can't continue....

Yeah, a guy who can play guitar that way and play the keys so well, all while turning his back on formal music training.
Jerk.

Yep, quite the monster axeman. He may not have formal training but he studied Allen Holdsworth extensively. That may be a PhD equivalent. Eddie can play in my band anytime. I'll even roll his amp in for him:)

Speaking of Holdsworth, who here has the first UK record? How the heck did he get his guitar to sound like a sax on "In The Dead of Night"? That guy is a monster.

I always thought Lennon's solo in "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" sounded a lot like a sax.

WHY???? He'd better off record an instrumental CD with his brother and his son.

A lot of pros say to try and emulate the sax when writing/doing a lead.

From what I understand, Holdsworth has used a synth guitar quite a lot, once you run it through a midi you can make it sound like anything and still be playing guitar...He also did an interview a few years back with one of the guitar mags, talked about the synth guitar a bit and it had a picture or three of him playing it.

As far as emulating sax goes, that was Ritchie Blackmore's advice to beginner guitar players years ago, I give the same advice, and have tried to copy sax solos a lot while practicing. The idea is that a tenor sax has about the same range as guitar, but most sax players can get it so smooth it's unreal, so trying to duplicate sax solos should help you play smoother guitar. It might help that I play sax too...
