Would You Give Up Your 9 - 5 ?

Lets say you're in your 40s-50s and you have a great job and
medical benefits and a wife and home and things that are
supported from your job. Then out of the blue you finally
become musically and commercially viable. It is suggested that you tour.
You have heard and read all the pitfalls associated with finances over
touring monies. It is questionable what you would end up with
considering all the variables. Your heart is pulled in that direction
but your head is saying wake up and smell the cornflakes. First
thought might be get a lawyer. Second thought might be they can be full of sh**t also.
You wouldn't want to end up that fool that lost everything chasing a dream.
You also wouldn't want to miss an opportunity to change your life
for the better.

This is a scenario that I'm sure has befallen a few over time. It is almost
a terrible place and a wonderful place to be at the same time. I'm sure a
lot of trust has to be given out but trust is very risky. Trust manager,
Lawyer, venues and other people that may be spending your money.

Plus, would you be happy? At that age you don't have the energy you
used to have. You probably have grown accustomed to your life as it is now.
Is it all about YOUR happiness at this point?
There would be a lot to think about unless you were a very selfish person.

Just food for thought for those that might be careful what they wish for.

Um....a good many successful musicians and artists I know are there because they were selfish. And they let nothing stop them from getting what they wanted. And their family life revolved around their dream, not the other way around. You really cant complain if your not willing to sacrifice something. It's true in any business. A successful CEO will relocate his family and upset their way of life, for a shot at moving up the rung.

And BTW klug, why type everything in Bold?.....we all know you're important.

Yep, jobs, houses, wives all come and go, but realizing a dream is a once in a lifetime opportunity. But I would have to have already sold a lot of units before I would even consider it. Most of the people on the road make a lot less than I do now. Only the big names get the big money.

Get over the bold Scrat.
Always have Always will.
Jimmy you're right about the units, I guess
that is a real indicator that the $ is even out there.

Yep, as sure as cows leave patties in cow pastures, I'd jump on it.

Been there done that actually, somebody contacted me on Bandmix a couple of years ago, I packed up and went to Baltimore, only to find out hte guy was conning me all along, didn't have anything ready to call in people from out of state. So I came back home...

would I do it again? Yep, but I'd try to check it out a bit more thoroughly first...

Been there...turned it down... was asked to join a very successful AC/DC tribute act that was set to travel all over Europe, Australia, England and New Zealand... Couldn't do it.. Can't leave my family just like that...wouldn't do that to my wife and handicapped kid... If only I got this offer in between marriages, I'd have jumped right on it!

Funny you should mention it. Recently saw a movie, Pop Rocks. It was about a guy who was lead singer in a KISS-type metal band in the 70's. In the present day he's a very conservative yuppie who works in an office. The band decide to reform and stalk him until he agrees to sing again. Kind of like the Blues Brothers, in a way. Anyway, it starts interfering with work and, eventually, he just tells the boss to take "this job and shove it." Funny.

Mike, James Williamson stopped making music after the Stooges and became a VP at Sony making the big bucks. But he walked away from it when Iggy called. Was it the right decision? Only he knows that for sure, but history will remember him for his music, not for his work at Sony.

If you can swing it, financially, why not? Gene Simmons doesn't seem to be hurtin' for cash.

Oh, absolutely. Also, I'd think that he made enough at Sony that, whatever happened with the Stooges, he'd still be doing fine.

Don't know what I'll be doing in 10 years, but I imagine if I had a wife, and maybe even some kids, then I would have settled on that lifestyle.

The fact that I used to be married speaks volumes about the things I say on this board. My goals are different now. I have no emotional ties with anybody. No kids. I've seen everything around my small corner of the map. So, I have absolutely no problem venturing out, in fact, I'm hoping that will happen within the year. I don't encourage people with wives and kids to join me...but at their own risk, do so.

That being said I know what it's like to have these obligations. I would have still done it, but it would have been harder, and I don't think being homesick would have been a good motivator.

Until my kids are completely independent, there is no way I would want to go on the road - I'd miss them too much. If I didn't have any ties, then I'd do it for the adventure, that is if I knew it would pay the bills while I was on the road :) Otherwise, I'd be content (as I am now) with music as hobby - a creative release.
