Quite good.

I've noticed a trend towards very "nasal" vocals in feminine artists.
I suppose it does soften the lyric some.
But IMO a little, goes a long long way.

Yeah, what Sans said. + She has a great voice, but relies too heavily on the voice inflection thingy she does, IMO - it gets tiring pretty quickly for me - but it's probably the "in thing", so what do I know

For me, I am most dazzled and amazed when I hear a natural vocal.
The way God made it.

I have come to be really turned off by all the market/fad-driven growls and effects people think sounds...well, whatever.

That's one of the things that drew me to strongly toward IONA: the lead vox chik sings with such purity of tone.

I went to our church's Nativity & they did the infamous 'breath of Heaven'
and the girl singing lead used that growling thing like every line, and I was really bummed: I thought it sounded horrible.
It ruined the thing for me.
But I'm probably now over-sensitized to that stuff.

It's a little new country for my taste, but it isn't terrible.

This girl has a lot of natural ability. I LIKE the slightly gravel voice.
That helps keep her unique and not typical. She does have good writing
skills but I see her biggest problem, besides needing to find a better
studio that knows how to mix, is that she needs to learn how to breath
correctly while singing. If you notice she is taking breaths sometimes
a couple seconds apart. She is not useing her air efficiently. This is resulting in her loosing volume at the end of a phrase and not holding
any notes to any length. It also makes her sound choppy in her
delivery.

You can tell she has a beautiful voice, when she uses it - but that's not really what she's doing - she's using an "out of breath" voice - she is transitioning to new intervals on the end of half-breaths and engaging the highs using falsetto as her way out. It's a style trend that I've heard in other young aspiring singers, not so unique and kind of neat when you first hear it, but it's not her real vocal register that she's relying on for her sound.

I think if she worked with a vocal instructor, she would mature into a really good singer - knowing when to invoke that style to spice up a song, but as it is - she relies on that technique solely to the detriment of the song as a whole, imo.

Sir, I think you are refering to the style more originaly used by the
singer for The Rasberries. It is a cool style if not overdone. You
are right about a vocal coach. Someone to teach her to be more
efficient with her air.

I am starting a side project in which I am singing Romantic Standards &
Love Songs. I am finding that shifting to falseto and back in higher notes
is a skill that I need to practice more. Especially when also useing
power. Doing that without being very obvious and distracting from the
song is a real vocal skill.

I'm planning recording my voice for the first time - I'm almost done with the lyrics for a simple song I'm writing - you'll get to hear my terror of a voice hopefully by week's end? lol. I've never really heard myself in a song context so I figure I'll punish everyone here then critique myself so Katy doesn't feel like I'm just being biased towards her
