No, not dead. Neither is punk, metal, rap, jazz, fusion, folk and big band. But they're on life support. As long as most people get their music for free we are all as good as dead.

Eh...personally, I hope we can all evolve way past hip-hop, like we did doo-wop, bee-bop, clippety-clop, & gum-drops (all of which were already further evolved than hip-hop, as far as I can tell). Of course, there will always be those hangers-on that keep trying to revive old music styles, or at least keep them alive, & I say more power to them, as well...as long as we can continue to evolve...which is a problem, when we have all of these modern technologies that seem to actually be holding us BACK from musical (& other) evolution, by making everything so much easier for the incredibly below-average among us to outshine the ppl who do real work in their craft, in the eye of the public. Musically (& otherwise), we seem to be DEvolving, imho, thanks to autotune, drum machines, patchwork sampling techniques, pitch & tempo controls, & making fashion & shock value more important than musical & lyrical substance...but I'm sure you're all tired of hearing me bitch about that, so I'll shut up now...

On the contrary, I think you need to bitch more. Maybe get through to some people.

By bitching to musicians, I'm preaching to the choir. The problem is with the media's choke-hold on our entertainment. What they force-feed us is simple - find a formula that worked for someone once, & beat us over the head with it until it dies a horrible death due to overexposure. Look at the parallels in TV shows, even on cable. Some guy came up with a show about a pawn shop, & now there's 3 of 'em on various channels, in the course of maybe 3 months. The Apprentice, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, The Biggest Loser, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, The Ultimate Fighter - christ! They're ALL the same damned show!

Now take a look at the pop formula in music - someone warbled a scale in interesting ways in a gospel song, & ppl liked it. Now, if ya can't warble a scale at every opportunity (or MAKE an opportunity to warble) you ain't a good singer, in the eyes of the American public. I'm waiting for someone to bring back yodeling. Then, as it becomes popular, I'm gonna take an ice pick to my ears.

We need interested ppl to start up really challenging, non-genre-specific media outlets, that deliver quality music to the masses, & see if it can take hold, like it did in the 60's & 70's. I haven't seen it in a looooong time. Too many ppl get caught up in one act, like Grunge, for example, which got so specialized that every band in the genre had to be interchangeable, or they'd lose their audience.

I blame the school system for making our ppl too stupid to accept more than one thing at a time in any given week of their lives...but I could be wrong...it might only be the media...or my dad...

The internet is a great outlet. In fact, I've seen some pretty original stuff happening on some collaboration websites. I wouldn't classify these projects as "delivering to the masses", but people who are interested in new styles aren't limited to what gets pushed via mainstream.

cheers!

Yeah, I like the internet, Chris, but I have yet to find a way to seek out new stuff on my own, without being directed here or there by others. If there were a site that just played new music in all its forms, I'd go there daily.

Dude, if you see a need - fill it. Create site that does that and if it catches on, make some cash off it ^.^
