I don't know if these are the "greatest" but they are certainly my favorites:
David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb
David Gilmour - Marooned
Carlos Santana - Bella
Reeves Gabrels - Why Do I Feel Like I Am Bleeding?
Jeff Beck - Two Rivers
Mark Kendall (Great White) - House of Broken Love

I never liked Great White at all, but I heard that song once and had to have it. His playing on that particular song is way above what I ever considered him capable of, considering the nature of their general recordings.
You really should listen to it just once, for the guitar work alone

that's the whole idea behind this post... introduce me to many players/solos/songs I wouldn't have visited otherwise.
I will take your advice... as soon as I can locate the song.

Quite a few great guitar solos by some great musicians have been mentioned except a couple... [/b]DRAGONFORCE, they have two lead guitarists who I still drool at when they play. Then there is the great man of the chickens, BUCKETHEAD. Watch him play live before you die! I was lookin like this (@@) during the show. On the 6th day god made the chickens, on the 7th day he built BUCKETHEAD!

everytime I watch Joe Satriani play "Devil's slide" on the live in San Fran dvd...... I still get goosebumps... just incredible... its just....incredible. It's just....... incredible...... I cant describe it to ya....
you just have to see it.
Satch boogie is a great one as well.
I thinks the guitar work by Tonny Iommi (sp.?) in "Heaven and Hell" is right up there.
Ritchie Blackmore - Man on the Silver Mountain... nice riff.
Lanny Cordola - Angry Candy
