Both are great and if I had a choice I am afraid I'd have to pick Austin its way more beautiful. If you like the beach and sweating your arse off then Houston. Your gonna sweat in Austin but its a dry heat much more tolarable! Here in Houston the weather is almost ALWAYS dominated from the Gulf. Hell we were in the 90's just last week!

As far as job opportunities Houston is the better bet but not by far! I freakin LOVE Austin!

Hey, I've been to Hell, MI. It's a nice quiet place. Tiny, but quiet.

If I had to choose I'd go Austin. I don't like Houston and never have.
Austin is easier to negotiate as a driver IMO. And also easier to get the hell out of when the time comes. Houston is situated in the hurricane band.
Much like My home town of Corpus Christi. The possibility of needing to evacuate is real and present concern.
If it was me I'd locate a smaller community on the outskirts of either and commute.
But I hate the "evil big city" so take that into consideration.

I agree with George and J.
I've lived in Houston and Austin, I say Austin my a mile. The only big city I would like to return to. Houston sucks, traffic on 610 is only for those with serious masochistic tendencies...20 years ago...it's an ugly, congested, violent place with a hellacious crime rate.
Austin is gorgeous, loads of nice places not far away, including a couple of great spots on Lake Travis, Zilker Park, Mount Bonnell, hike and bike trails, good live music everywhere, South By Southwest is held there every year and if you keep up with entertainment you can catch Eric Johnson and Van Wilks now and then.
It's changed since I was there, but Austin is still the place I'd go, and given a choice of Houston or Austin, I wouldn't even think about it. Austin is a no brainer.
