I like smooth fun better! But all seriousness aside, when I was starting to play, I got a fuzz box before I got an amp. It was a horrendous Fuzz Face imitation from a department store catalog that I used to plug into the folk's hi-fi. It was disgusting sounding...I was in heaven!
