If John Lennon had still been alive, he would be turning 70 on Saturday - but he has received the ultimate tribute in the shape of a Google Doodle.

The website featured an image which has been designed in honour of the late singer-songwriter's milestone birthday.
Clicking on a play button on the logo leads to a 32-second animated video, set to the chorus of Lennon's classic single Imagine.

Fitting tribute: John Lennon has been given the Google doodle treatment in a special interactive logo to mark what would have been his 70th birthday. The clip features pictures of trees, leaves, and butterflies merging in to one another while the song plays.

It reverts back to a black and white, nature inspired version of the Google logo with Lennon's cartoon-inspired self-portrait in the centre, before automatically bringing up a search page of Lennon links.
Users can also click through to watch the doodle again on YouTube.
Lennon was born in Liverpool on October 9 1940 and became globally famous as a member of The Beatles, alongside Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

The animated, nature-themed clip plays out over the chorus of Lennon's classic 1971 song Imagine. His birth date was October 9, 1940. The clip ends in a cartoon arrangement of the logo, with Lennon's picture in the middle. He had a successful solo career after the band split in 1970, with Imagine being one of his biggest hits.

However, he was tragically shot dead by Mark David Chapman outside his New York apartment on December 8 1980, in front of his wife Yoko Ono.

Chapman is currently serving a life sentence for Lennon's murder.

One of the greatest bands of all time!

Like Hendrix, no one can ever repeat what they accomplished. If you don't at least APPRECIATE the music of the Beatles, then honestly... you don't know sh*t about music.
