His interview makes it sound like he was burned out from being the responsible one in the band for all its activities for 20+ years. I'd love to have that problem too. I just hate to see DT break up after so many years of great musicianship together.

I read that press release too. I thought his comments were kind of disingenuous because he's a known/confessed obsessive-compulsive. He is "in charge" of all things DT only because he needs to be. He can't operate any other way. I'm sure some of the DT guys wouldn't mind having more control, but when you work with a control-freak you kind of get used to letting go.

I am happy to hear that DT is moving on without him. I'm excited to hear what they come up with and who takes that seat from here on out.

I remember when Kevin Moore left the band - everyone thought that was the end of DT and they would suck after that. But they eventually filled that slot with Jordan Rudess, who IMO is the best keyboardist in rock and who I feel is a definite upgrade over Moore, and they wrote a lot of great music after that. So, if Portnoy's departure ends up putting someone else in the drummer seat that actually ends up being better and fitting the band better, then great for DT and great for us fans.

Plus, I am sure the rest of the band will not miss dodging the Camel spit...

It will be interesting to see which direction they go.

Although I think the guy is an amazing drummer, I nevered cared for his personality. I got a little chuckle out of his diva-like statements about how he was done with DT, and basically wanted everyone to be done also. He seems genuinely put off that they would decide to go on without him...give a monkey a brain and he will tell you he's the center of the universe.

Hey! Maybe they'll pick up Chris "Gartdrumm" Gartman from the band Three. They've toured together and jammed together (He's an Elkins native).
