Can't put it off anymore - I gotta go out in the heat & dig holes for an out-building so that I can build the out-building so that I can move everything out of my basement so that I can help my son move in.
WHY is there always so much WORK to do so that I can do MORE WORK?
I think I could whine about this all day long!
Grumble gripe bitch moan holler complain groan...wait...this isn't getting it done...better get busy, then...

So...it's been an hour & a half.
I have one hole dug...1 foot down...damn this ground is hard & rocky!
I also cut down two small trees...
Break time!
(That's the advantage to working for yourself!)

I'll take hard and rocky over blue clay anytime. It's almost impossible to dig in my yard; we just cover it up with a layer of peat to grow anything.

I dug some footers in red clay a few years ago. We'd had a 3 month long drought. The ground was too hard to dig. I rented a 2-man gas-powered digging auger. Used two guys to drive it, & one 225 lb man laying on top of it to do anything at all. The auger just spun on the ground as the clay turned to a fine dust, the consistency of flour. It took 12 full hours to dig 4 holes. It was just dry dust for 22 inches, then it sucked itself down really fast, once it hit moister clay.
You should try that, next time you need to dig in your yard. It's really fun!

You guy's should try digging in this black Texas Gumbo clay. I have been digging in it all of my life. One summer fresh out of high school I worked for a plumbing co. digging ditches for new sewer and water lines for new homes. I worked shoulder to shoulder with an Illegal alien. I will tell you that Mexican taught me how to move some dirt with a shovel and sharp shooter. To this day as old as I am I am a dirt moving MO-FO!

Never tried the black or blue clay, but I slipped on some wet calichi clay while I was in central TX. That stuff will kill ya if you ain't careful, cuz its slipperier than ice!
Just wrenched my back a good one when I was moving the downed trees & stepped on a damned thorn that went right through my thin sole of my shoe.
I hate locust trees!
This has stopped being fun, guys. I'm taking another break.

Phil, I used a gas-powered auger when I was making my deck, I almost lost the damned thing. Once it got into the wet clay it wanted to keep going.

I absolutely insist on SHROOMS please.
The world would be a better place if they grew everywhere, however it might have a pungent aroma too. Shall we send out a party for Phil to Gather em up?

Yeah you go doing shrooms and you'll get some holes all right. They may not be where you want them, but you'll have some.
