Lady Gaga's 13 VMA Nominations: How Do They Measure Up?

Lady Gaga may just have to get used to this.

Just one year after crashing the Video Music Awards with eight nominations, the "Alejandro" singer has upped the ante once again by piling up a record 13 noms for this year's VMAs. Not only did she set a new bar for total nominations, Gaga also became the first female artist nominated for two different clips in the coveted Video of the Year category for "Bad Romance" and "Telephone."

It's fitting that her baker's dozen leaped over another high-water mark set by "Telephone" co-star Beyoncé, who scooped up nine nominations in 2009 for her smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" clip, which won three Moonmen, including Video of the Year.

But in the modern VMA era (since 2000), Beyoncé isn't even the closest to Gaga's record. That distinction belongs to VMA darling Missy Elliott, who (counting professional categories) rolled up an impressive 11 nominations in 2001 for her "Get Ur Freak On" and "Lady Marmalade" videos. That same year, Fatboy Slim also had an impressive showing for his Christopher Walken-assisted dance classic "Weapon of Choice," which put up nine nominations.

At eight nominations, Missy did it again with another brain-melter, "Work It," in 2003, which is tied with Green Day's nomination haul in 2005 for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers each nabbed seven in 2006 for, respectively, "Hips Don't Lie" and "Dani California," numbers equaled in 2007 by Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé for, respectively, their "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" and "Irreplaceable" clips.

Now that she's got one record under her leopard-print belt, Gaga can start setting her sights on the biggest target in the VMA universe: Madonna's record of 20 VMA wins. With a win last year, she's got one down, 19 to go.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12.

She sure catures a person's attention... but so does a 5 car pile-up on the interstate!

LOL

There are catchy hooks in her songs, but for the life of me, I just don't get the level of attention, and more so... the PRAISE she receives. Maybe I haven't listened well enough, but my assessment so far, is that this is more a reflection of the lack of truly good and unique NEW artists, with good music, than of her own talents. She certainly sings better than Madonna, but she is not a great singer, by any stretch. She is a decent songwriter, which is how she got her break... writing for other people, but even there... I don't see most of her songs standing the test of time, the way even Madonna's have. I think people are desperate for a new, younger Madonna, and she is about the only choice for that kind of gaudiness/shock right now!

I'd love for something to change my opinion, but I don't see it happening any time soon. Sorry guys! :-(

As an aside... it is kind of ironic, that a person, whose career is built around sexual suggestiveness, does not have sex herself, but rarely.

She claims she is "afraid" that her creativity will be "stolen" through her vagina.

It's sex for the new millennium - more sex appeal, but less actual sex...like false advertising, if you ask me!

Just wait until you see the first fisherman bob video hopefully coming out in the next year. Of course that's if we can get a CD out the door first. I'm starting to get organized and I've talked to the band members about recording one. We'll probably do a mix of mainly covers and a few covers.
