I've been talking with this guy for, like, 6 months or more, that I met in here. Last night he called me, frantic to just go out & play something somewhere, cuz his band's been stumbling around for awhile, not really doing anything.
So I gave him directions to this teensy lil bar what does basically a country acoustic open mic. He showed up with a lil Marshall & a Strat, & when I got my turn to play, I called him up to play with me.
He's pretty damned good! Not a style that Flamingo Road could use, really, but I'd love to work him in the studio for some of my own songs. He kicked some serious butt when I gave him a chance to play, & it was way cool to have someone fit so well in anything I threw his way. I hit him with some Floyd, a Randy Newman, & an original or two, & he fit like he knew the stuff for months. A nice, soft-spoken guy who plays well is a refreshing change, ain't it?

Sounds good, philbymon.
What you describe is pretty common in these parts - there's a lot of that style of open mike around my area.
That kind of open mike tends to attract folks who are more in it for the music, rather than the image and what-not.
I've met a lot of quiet, unassuming, ordinary-seeming guys - who get up and wow the audience . . .
Those kindsa people are a pleasure to work with . . .
.
Oh - another thing: don't skip these kinds of open mikes because it's not your style of music.
Many folks tend to just play songs that they already know.
. . . just picking up a song or 2, every so often.
But they may also LOVE an entirely differnt style of music than what they play . . . just never learned to play it.
Your style of music may be what they're looking for,

LOL
If you only knew how many styles of music I've played over the last 10 years!
I never stick my nose up at many styles...maybe screaming stuff, but that's prolly only cuz I never played it...
I only know of that one countryish open mic around here, but I go occasionally & play whatever I want, & it always goes over pretty well. I'll back anyone up on anything, if given the opportunity. (I'd even do it with screamo, truth be told!)

So I just got a call from this guy from a craigslist ad...he wants a bass player.
I got a short list of tunes -
Harder to Breathe- Maroon 5
Dont tread on me- 311
Sound of madness- Shinedown- 1 whole step down
Slither- Velvet revolver
Bad Girlfriend- Theory of a deadman-1 whole step down
Use Somebody- Kings of Leon
Black Hole Sun- Soundgarden
Heavy- Collective Soul- Half step down
I'm trying out Monday night. Never played a single one of these!
His plan is to get a high end band going what can make more than the usual $100-a-man. I'm all for that!
They use Earbuds, but I ain't got none, so I s'pose I'll hafta dig up some headphones...
At least they have an Ampeg in the practice room, so I won't need to lug my amp...
Wish me luck! I'm off to the woodshed...
(Hey, maybe you were right, Shredd, & cl's the way to go, after all!)
