The Garnett North Lake monster still lives...

I had him (or her) on again today for the fourth time this year. Twice it broke my line and twice made breathtaking runs into deep water. I have yet to move it one millimeter towards me. Today I got a glimpse of it for the first time but still don't know what specie it is. It could be a huge wiper which is a hybrid between a white bass and a striped bass that the Kansas Fisheries and Wildlife Dept. stocks in hundreds of lakes. The fish is easily over three feet long. If I can get it in into open water and stop its run I may have a chance to land it. A fish can swim but it can't hide from me...

Matching wits with a fish can be trying at times. :)

I've come to the conclusion that ALL fish are smarter than I...doesn't stop me from trying though.

Maybe noodling?

I suggest you focus on that fish and take note of
conditions where and when you got him on the hook,
Upgrade your line and always be aware of drag settings.
Maybe use a treble hook also. Always go fishing with a long handle net
and maybe switch to spider line.

Yesterday I was using a lure with FIVE hooks and it still got loose, maybe just liphooked it with one of the hooks. There was a lot of wind yesterday. I try and fish on the shore where the wind is blowing against which was the case yesterday. The other three times I hooked it was in a much different spot and not much wind. I had the best chance of landing it yesterday as it went straight out into deeper, open water. The previous three times it was in a spot with lots of underwater obstructions it could get tangled up in. I carry a long handled net with me always. My drag is always set properly. Sometimes when I hook a big fish I turn off the anti-reverse which allows me to play the fish more with my reel. Sometimes it's dangerous to have any drag on as a fish like a wiper can make very hard fast runs and snap any line with any amount of drag on. I have never used spider line but my fishing buddy has and for the type of fishing we do it didn't work well for him. I generally hook way more fish on very light line and can get all of them in when played properly. I'd rather lose a few more fish and a few more lures that get snagged than use heavier line and hook fewer fish. There's a delicate trade-off and I prefer hooking more fish. I might gradually increase the pound test in going after this brute. Don't know at what point it'll stop hitting my offerings as the line gets heavier. Another big advantage of light line is castability. I can cast a lure much farther with lighter line and cover more water. Anyway, it's there swimming around with my name stamped on its forehead, just a matter of time before I get it all the way in...

Bob you said a Wiper is part striped bass. Are you talking about the saltwater striper or some other mix?

Kentucky Striped Bass = "striper"

Used to catch quite a few of them ( a hybrid themselves I do believe ) in one of our local power plant lakes. A good firm white meat and quite tasty fried. :D

Yes, I am talking about the saltwater striper. Saltwater stripers can live quite well in freshwater and have been stocked in numerous large reservoirs, mainly throughout the southeast United States. Beaver Lake in Arkansas is famous for tackle busting stripers. The striped bass is in the same family of fish as our common white bass. Those two species occasionally hybridize in nature and hatcheries started purposely hybridizing the two species to stock the hybrid in lakes. Kansas has the white bass-striper hybrid (wiper) in almost every reservoir in the state. They can grow up to 20 pounds and are known as incredible fighters. They also eat a LOT fo shad and hit shad imitations quite readily. People also catch wipers on liver since they feed wipers liver in the hatcheries. I caught a huge wiper from the local Johnson County lake (Shawnee Mission Lake) about four years ago. It was just getting dark and I was about to go home when it hit. It took me a half hour to get it in. They can PUll but if you can stop their run you'll get it in eventually.

As Klug said: focus on that fish. focus on that fish, Luke Skywalker and the force will be with you. (Grasshopper works too.)

I used to like fishing. Now I don't fish anymore. Fish are slimy. They feel just like the meat that was pushed to the back of my refrigerator for too long.

My drummer has this teensy lil pond, but there are some huge bass in it. I've caught a few of 'em, but there's one I've had my eye on for over a year, & it's really frustrating that I can't catch this huge fish in that tiny lil pond! I've even seen it, but I can't get it on a hook for the life of me!

I had a hand-sized sunny on my hook once, & it took it over halfway in its mouth, & just laid there in plain sight until I moved the line. Then, of course, it let go, the rat bastid!

Of course, I have to remember that last time I had a vendetta for a fish...I got attacked by a beaver!
