That's right Jimmy. We have a lot of groundhogs here in the city. In my yard even. I'm baiting my live trap for relocation tonight!

What are you using to fertilize those toes in your garden Paul ??
I had great intent to do a container garden this year even though I live on a little over two acres as my lot. Cats and dogs don't mix with a traditional garden.
Alas I procrastinate professionally so the only thing growing in my yard is weeds.
And they are not even "good" weeds, just freakin weeds.
It's been so hot and dry here I've only mowed twice this season.

That would suck Jimmy.
It takes 6 - 8 hours to mow and weed eat my place to about 75%.
My "yard" is over two acres.

My yard is 4.9 acres. There are so many trees that I don't have enough sun for a vegie garden. That kinda pisses me off, but whatcha gonna do? I ain't cuttin' down my tress. I like 'em!
I guess I could take out the small flower garden I have out front, & plant vegies...it's the only spot that gets light.
I'm gonna try to get a garden on a vacant lot in my neighborhood next year. No one has tried that yet. The owners of the property never come up to see it. I think they're idiots.

I love my trees too Phil. Probably would not cut them either.
Though a thin strip running east west to let the sun to the ground would not be a bad idea.
East Texas has lots and lots of trees. Not near like in my youth but still lots of trees.
I don't understand these yupsters who buy a acre or two, clear cut
all the trees off, build a home and then plant a couple of dinky assed trees ??
Me thinks they may be idiots too.

Trees! You want to see trees. I don't know how to post pictures on a post, but I have trees that are older than any of us. I'm not a tree hugger but I would love to put up solar panels, and give Gwen a place to grow her veggies but that would mean taking down trees. AIN'T gonna happen while I live here,,,,Part of my responsability is protecting these old beauties.
If someone tells me how to put up a picture I'll show you . Thanks guys.

I refuse to have grass. Many people work all week and come home
to slave in their yards for hours mowing and weed eating. They could be
making music or Love or fishing or golfing or gambling or taking the dog to the lake or working on the boat.
Many times you find people in a typical neighborhood in actual
competition with each other over their lawns. They get VERY
defencive and protective of all of it. It just seems like such a
waste of energy to go to the extremes that I see sometimes.
Don't get me wrong. I love my yard but I don't invest many hours into it.
I plant perennials that are generally maintenance free. I prune my trees to be storm resistant. I use flowering vines and evergreens that just grow.
Most of my yard work is spent fertilizing only.
You may not realize it but grass can be actually destructive to its
surroundings. It can rob the trees from water that would have
soaked into the ground for the trees. It can also rob nutrients from the surrounding trees.
If you dump an 8oz glass of water directly onto a sponge then
immediately squeeze the sponge back into the glass, you have a level.
Now place any piece of cloth over the same dry sponge and dump the water again. After squeezing the sponge again into the empty glass
your level will be lower. This the effect grass has on trees. It robs them of water and nutrients. So the next time you wonder why a tree in your yard has dead branches or is dieing without a reason, look down not up.
I admit grass can be beautiful when kept manicured but it can be
destructive with run off from fertilizers running off into streams and
negative effects on surrounding pant life.
My advice, keep things as close to natural as possible.

You guys are in trouble tomorrow when I post pics of my garden
. I went to Penn State for "Soil Science" as well as "Performing Arts/Classical Guitar", so...you'll see
. The tomato plants are over 5 feet tall already, let alone the rest of the garden.
Soil preparation is key people. Seems that everyone just thinks that skipping that part doesn't matter. I laugh at those that believe that.
Paul: Get rid of those stupid cages. They only hamper growth. It's better to let the plant have a need for support before you give it support that it doesn't need and blocks it's light and makes it a weaker specimen. Just a little friendly advice...

Thanks d but my tallest tomato plants are over 6'. I have more than I know what to do with. I'm giving them to neighbors. And I have hardly invested any time. And the plants were laying over on the ground when I put the cages on them. They needed the support when I gave it. It is blocking light however. What can I do for that ?
