Someone once told me that Poco was actually The Royal Guardsmen, but I haven't found that to be true in my itsy bitsy bit of research I've done. They don't seem to have common members.

Does anyone recall this band?

Normally, I don't much care for country rock, but I like this tune, for some reason.

that credits Richie Furay and Jim Messina with putting Poco together in 1868 after the breakup of Buffalo Springfield.

I don't know much about the Royal Guardsmen, but have been a long time Poco fan, ever since I heard Crazy Eyes in the 70's. even though I thoroughly dislike country, most of the Poco stuff sounds pretty good, with a few notable exceptions. Crazy Eyes, Rose of Cimmaron and Legend are albums I've worn out over the years.

Some of their stuff is excellent, my favorites are always the rockers - Crazy Eyes, Legend, A Right Along, and a few others. Magnolia is one I played at solo gigs for years, a laid back JJ Cale song.

Poco was also one of the first groups to experiment with a slide guitar called a MeloBar. Designed to hang by a guitar strap like any regular guitar, but with an angled neck made to be played like a lap steel. A Right along is the most notable example, that was the song they used it on for a documentary about the instrument in the early 70's, and that was my first exposure to their music. I loved that song at first listen.

I'm a long time Poco fan, going back to their beginning.ith their first alvum, "Picking Up The Pieces", and I have never, ever run across that connection. Furray and Messina came out of the ruins of Buffalo Springfield. Putting a band like Poco together was something they had talked about for a long time. The wikipedia link for The Royal Guardsmen is below, it does not mention anyone who was ever in Poco.
