Question for Jimmy (and other software/IT folks)

Jimmy,

What is your work environment like? Specifically, work hours?

I'm looking for work (since I'm moving cross country) and until I started job hunting I wasn't worried, but now stories about super long work hours and massive overtime are totally freaking me out.

Our particular field seems really vulnerable to this type of ridiculous work schedule. I sort of feel lucky where I am: I work 40 hours and if I work OT (which is almost never due to budget) I get comped for it.

Curious what other tech-people, especially programmers are experiencing in their workplaces.

I work Mon-Fri 8:30am to 5:00pm with 1/2 hour lunch. No weekends or overtime except for very special occasions.

Been working 50 hours a week for two months now, with no end in sight.
But I'm not a programmer.
And my region is pretty much your region right now.

Going to school next month for programmyness though.

Do you work for any kind of city/county/state/fed government Jimmy?

Or is this a private corp?

Private firm. I prefer small to medium sized privately owned companies.
