Well OK, heres the juice. This started out me being asked to bring some Country music into the mix by request of the people putting this shin-dig together. Initialy I was told 10-15 songs. I put 10 together and recorded them for all the players to review. Some Vince Gill, Joe Diffie, Brooks & Dunn even a Don Mclean song I Love. 1 week ago I was told it was cut to 5 songs because more bands were coming so there would be less time. Thats cool I understand. I arrive at the rehersal last night and the reality of what I've gotten myself into hits me. They imediatly start suggesting other songs for me to sing. They have not spent any time with the CD I recorded for EACH of them. I am introduced to 2 girls who are sapposed to be singing back up. 1 is the wife of one of the players and the other is a friend of hers. Over the next 2 hours it is obvious that they are not singers. They are timid and afraid of the mic and always need to be holding the lyrics, you know the type. 1 of the songs they want to do is a song by Ricochet called Seven Bridges Road. Its a nice tune but calls for strong harmonies. IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN WITH THESE TWO! I told my friend that asked me to do this that I will not sing harmonies with these two in front of 20,000 people. I told that I will pick the 5 Country songs and they can stand in the back somewhere and try to sing back-up cause I will sing right over them and they wont be heard. This made me feel like some kind of Country DIVA or something but I just cant put myself in that position. They may give me the boot but I don't think so because I sang a couple Gill songs for them and they seemed more than impressed. Aparently all the other music that will be at the show will be a Bluegrass Christian type music. Oh yeah, the lead guitar player got bit by a dog yesterday on his left hand. Pray for me Craig.

Actualy I have excepted that it is what it is and I just want to be able to say I sang to whatever thousands of people once. I would like to know I sounded good though.

Geeze,

Sorry to hear the way it is going. The asking and then not even listening to your material would be an out for me. I sure don't need someone to help me sound bad on a band stand, especially when I would sound better by myself.

Maybe that would be an option. Just tell them all to go get a beer while you sit on stage and entertain the crowd. That's what my old band used to do to me since I knew so many finger pickin solos. They'd take off 10 minutes before the official break and announce that the guitar player would play a few songs for them. Then they would leave me to sink or swim all by my lonesome.

It would be funny to take along an MP3 player with the backing of your guys and just start doing your thing to your music. Sounds like you got saddled with a few hacks.

I can sing with the original artists vocal acrobatics and therefore cover a lot of stuff you would normaly hear in a live situation.
submitted song list:
Castles In The Air -- Don Mclean
Don't Come Cryin To Me -- Vince Gill
Show Me A Woman -- Joe Diffie
My Next Broken Heart -- Brooks And Dunn
Young Man -- Billy Dean
If You Ever Have Forever In Mind -- Vince Gill
High Lonesome Sound -- Vince Gill
This Is Me Missing You -- James House
Take Your Memory With You -- Vince Gill
This Is Your Brain -- Joe Diffie

Klugmo not to be nosey but if your only doin a shortt set why would you do a bunch of songs by one artist, on that list Vince Gill is listed 4 times?

Just curious

I opted out of a gig at a hard rock cafe recently cause the backing band just didnt seem to be able to rock hard enough.

If you are doin a gig with 20,000 people I would want to be sharp as a tack, before I stepped out there with anyone.

Good Luck however it goes

A good song is a good song if sung well. These songs of Gill are very different styles of writing. Check out If you ever have forever in mind and High lonesome sound. That list was cut to 5 songs. Also this gig will be at a park outside in a pavillion so the sound will probably be a little iffy.

Im not up on country so I dont know the styles of each song. In my case I would think Iwas coming across as a tribute band if I did that many of one artist.

Doesnt matter to me one way or the other just caught my eye when I saw it.

Have a Great Gig and Kick Some Butt fo ryour fellow bandmixers!
