Damn!!! Check it out. So I think I got a good vocalist, right? This guy from Fairfield asks me if I'm white and says it's very important. WTF?!?!

So I tell him not fully, I'm part Choktaw, but even if I was fully white, so what? What a dingbat!

Out of all the propositions anyone has gotten here, I think mine beats all of yours!

I'd rather poke myself with a rusty knife than give a single riff to a dumbass like that!

Okay, I got something to say on this, too.

#1 - Every person has the right to be wrong. Let 'em be.

#2 - I, too, have very strong feelings on the subject, but I would have simply said that we would never be able to get along, considering our huge differences of opinion in this area, & left it at that.

#3 - By calling him out publicly, you have prolly created an even higher wall between him & the rest of the world in the subject, leaving him with that much less of a chance to grow the hell up.

I worked in a band that had booked a gig before I joined. They knew my feelings on racism, yet there was this gig they had at a bar with a buzzer on the door. The owner wouldn't allow anyone in but whites. They didn't tell me about this until we pulled into the parking lot. I was majorly PO'd, but didn't want to hurt the band I had just joined by walking out, so I said okay I'd do it - this one time only.

Somehow, the word got out to the owner about how I felt about his poilicy, & the next thing I know, I have this guy following me around, trying to defend himself to me. I think one of the guys told him, cuz I wasn't talking to anyone at that point.

"You see, Phil," he said. "I'm not a racist, but I have some clientelle who are bound to start up trouble if I let 'them' in." Yadda yadda yadda...

I told him that I was only here for the band. His policies are his choice. I don't like or agree with them, but I'd behave & do a good job for him, & I wouldn't ever be back. I spent not a cent in the bar. I accepted nothing buit my pay. On our break, I drove down the street & got myself some sodas, & every break after that I just went outside & avoided everyone. I figured it best to just stay away fom the place as much as possible.

Then, at the next band meeting, I tiold the guys that if they ever tried a stunt like that on me again, I would walk out, after creating such a scene that they wouldn't be able to get a gig again.

I'm sure there were lots of other ways to handle it all, but that worked for me. The band knew where I stood, & they knew I am crazy enough to back up my words, & we never had any more issues until I decided to quit & go out as a solo act.

Too many people today DON'T SAY ANYTHING when confronted by people like that, when that kind of person needs to hear MORE PEOPLE being vocal about it, not less. When you are silent about injustice or any kind of evil, then you are effectively CONDONING it!

Even though I created my last band to be a Southern Rock band, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I honored the holiday by changing our band profile pic out, for a "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" pic for that day.

I knew damn well I would get a few racist rednecks saying things about it, or deleting us from their friend's list. I figured... Fine. Good riddance. And sure enough, I did get messages, like... "Oh, so you guys are N---- lovers, huh?" And I would write back to those people, and get into long discussions with them, about why racism was pathetic and STUPID. Detailing how red heads were thought of as connected with the Devil at one time. How if it weren't RACE, people would divide over something else. That ignorance and hatred were at the heart of racism, and not anything logical or moral. How biologically, differing races are something like 99.8% identical in our biological make-up... and that there are actually GREATER things, biologically that separate us than race. That ALL HUMANITY originated from Africa. That ALL LIVING HUMANS on Earth today are BIOLOGICALLY RELATED.... it is a FACT, that we are ALL related physically, if you go far enough back. The discovery of remains of an ancient woman, that anthropologists dubbed "Eve" and who is related by DNA to ALL LIVING HUMANS ON EARTH TODAY, proves this.... so, that if you are going to hate people for being a different race, you are hating someone in your own FAMILY LINEAGE!

I explained the evolutionary purpose behind the variations in skin color that exist... how it merely protects us from our climates.... which is why people are darker, the closer you get to the Equator, and lighter skinned, the further away from the Equator you get. So that people in Iceland are very white, and people in Sub Saharan Africa, are very dark! Dark skin protects you from the sun. But in Northern or Colder climates, where the sun is not as strong, and does not last as long, lighter skin allows more sunlight into the skin, which is our primary source for Vitamin D, and having lighter skin, protects us from getting diseases like Rickets.

I had detailed discussions with these people, and guess what? Some would end up not writing back, but none that I know of deleted us... and much better than that... the MAJORITY.... YES.... THE MAJORITY of people I had these discussion with, came around and ended up admitting that what I was saying MADE SENSE and was TRUE, and that they would work to change the behaviors and attitudes they had, of which, most said.... they INHERITED from their parents and grandparents.

But, I wasn't weak about it.

I didn't kiss their asses and BEG to share something important with them.

I hit them straight out of the gate with...

"RACISM IS STUPID!!!!"

"And here's why...."

But it's been the experience of my life, that TAKING A PUBLIC STAND and being willing to PAY WHATEVER PRICE that comes with that stance, is the way HEARTS CHANGE and PEOPLE CHANGE and the WORLD CHANGES!!!

Some people will hate you.

But ultimately they hate you most, because.... YOU ARE RIGHT! AND THEY KNOW IT INSIDE THEIR HEARTS!!!

I dont understand your point. Why cant someone say I want to play in a white band or a black band or a latino band. I mean almost every document I fill out has a slot that asks your race. If someone wants to play with a white person then that is thier choice. Better to find that out on the first contact than to go thru everything and then find out.

I guess I missed the point where someone forming their own band can't set the requirements for the the vision that they have. So it's wrong to try to form an all white band when there are so many all black bands that wanted to hire only black musicians. PC is bullshit. If I want to hire a black bass player, or an Indian bass player I should be able to do so. I like playing with black musicians. If I wanted an all Indian band, I should be able to have one. After all, it is my band and it is my vision of what I am trying to do.

How many white guys get gigs on a reservation as a dancer in a pow wow ? I like playing with white musicians. I like playing with black musicians. I like playing with pink and green and purple musicians. But that's just me. I am not about to demand that someone else adopt my preferences.
I used to have an Indian bass player. He was damned good. My drummer pretty much only worked with black groups when he was in the service. Now I jam with a black bass player. He's damned good too.

To me it is like saying I want a white car. And someone else telling me I have to buy a yellow car because it's wrong for white guys to own white cars. It hurts the black cars feelings to see me driving a white car. Some may even call me racist because they know somewhere something way down deep in my subconscious is denying other colored cars a chance. Yeah, it is an absurd example. But PC is just as absurd to me. It is way too far over the line.

To me, PC is that stupid. I guess I'm not touchy feely enough to give a sh*t if someone doesn't want to hire me just because I'm white. No problem. Maybe there is another reason other than race behind the decision. Maybe it is like hiring a white guy instead of Jamie Fox to play Ray Charles in the movie. All motives aren't racist, although the left would have you believe that for the sake of causing dissension. Maybe it is for the appearance the one hiring sees in his vision.

I could never make it in this over the top political correctness bullshit. I just wouldn't let the government require that I hire some one based on ethnicity rather than performance. And I sure wouldn't want them to demand that I hire all white guys either. Last time I looked it was a free country, although that is rapidly coming to an end.

Music is music. If I don't want to hire you for ANY reason, that is my business since I am the one organizing whatever project. And I can hire or not hire someone for whatever reason I choose. I am not racist. But I do believe in freedom of choice for whatever reason. And that is exactly what I will do if it comes to forming a band. My band, my choices. Kinda like I get to pitch because I own the baseball.

So it is OK to murder babies, but it's not OK to request all white players for your band. What the f**k ever happened to common sense? If someone didn't want to hire me for a lead man I feel it is their loss, not mine. It sure wouldn't get on my tits.

You missed the part where someone has a RIGHT to be OUTRAGED at poor character, and outdated shameful behavior, especially in a modern era. Think of it this way... Madonna has every right to simulate sex acts before a large crucifix with an image of Jesus on it, onstage, if she chooses to. Music is about creation and expression. The message of music transcends race, age, gender and other barriers that society impose superficially. I feel that people who emphasize image may be missing the point of artistry in its purest form which is acceptance.
