Are people with artistic minds in general hard to get along with
because they usualy look at things so differently than most?

Not in my opinion. More on the lines of inner-focused (selfish) and imaginative (disinterested) and have strong desires (spoiled) and lack self discipline (lazy).

Add some heroin and enjoy the show :)

You could make that statement, & lots of ppl would agree.

Sometimes we artistical types are too wrapped up n the stuff in our heads, it's true, & that in itself makes us rather tougher to deal with than the guy who can deal with things without the distractions of artistic thought.

We do tend to be more easily distracted by that which goes on in the inside of our heads, as a group.

For me, I miss a lot of the stuff my wife says when I'm concentrating on or distracted by the music in my mind, & that really pisses her off.

Then there's the frustration that we feel when we aren't able to accomplish something, but there are some that are better able to handle it without taking it out on other ppl.

In the end, it depends upon the individual, really. I don't think that artists are really all that more difficult to deal with, myself. We are individuals, & need to be dealt with as such, just like anyone else.

A good artist questions everything and accepts nothing on face value. A good artist pushes boundries and forces people to think outside of their comfort zone. A good artist rejects tradition and embraces the new. These qualities tend to make the good artist difficult to understand and get along with.

Bad artists do none of the above and just produce "more of the same". They are just as boring as their art.

Hahaha! Is that something that we can blame on being of artistic minds, or just something that all men tend to learn as time goes on. I'm going with the latter...LOL!

In my view?

Yes they are. But you'd have to be on the other side of the coin, or at least be able to do that to notice it.

I am REALLY GLAD you asked this question! I had not even thought about this. And when I started to think about how I was going to answer, I initially was going to parrot what everyone else here said.

And then I actually thought about all the people I know and who I actually get along with.

And guess what?

Weirdly enough, I have found the exact opposite of what everyone else has said.

I tend to get along with creative and artistic people MUCH easier than non-creative, non-artistic people. In fact, all of my best friends are artistic, creative people.

I think there's a common bond there. Because we're artistic, creative people we understand each other better from the get-go. We tend to look past our differences faster and easier, because we share something as artists and creative people.

It's great that you asked this question because it made me think about all my friends... The people in my life I really cherish right now, and nearly all of them are really creative people.

I feel blessed.

colors - agree. WE as musicians probably do get along with our own just fine - but to our non-musical S/o's can you really say the same? Much like philby said about being in his own musical world and missing what his wife said (I do that ALL THE TIME!!), are we, as a "type" not harder to deal with generally, to the NT (neuro typical (normal!)) person?

Well Kramer,

I have the benefit of having divorced my non-musical, non-artistic wife earlier this year. She's a wonderful person, don't get me wrong. But it became clear to me that we were not a matched pair. We weren't right for each other.

And then... I found my soul mate...

And she's a professional singer...

So I no longer have to worry about the most important person in my life not getting me as an artist or creative person :)

I believe the artistic are planted in emotions and we tend to get fulfillment from evokeing it from those around us. I'm sure Kramer loves to make people dance, smile, cry, tap their foot and pay attention whith his guitar. Writing and singing for me is all about bringing emotion to the surface of people. It's a kind of high when you know you made that happen.

I could not agree more with this...

Being creative, being an artist, is about self expression. For the artist, expressing one's self is like breathing. We need to do it. It's in us to express ourselves. We cannot live without it. And to the non-artistic, non-creative people, they cannot understand that need. They cannot understand that our expression is as important to us as the air we breath.

And related to that is the role of the performer - someone who enjoys the reaction of others from their creativity/artistic expression.

And that very much is a high.

The past 6 months or so I have played more shows than any other year in my life. I have become utterly addicted to the life performance. I so enjoy being up in front of a crowd and performing.

Lately, I've also become addicted to composing. I'm writing new material on my acoustic so I can do some duet shows with my current female singer. I am absolutely thrilled when I write something new. I like playing my own material more than anything else I've ever learned to play.

I can't wait to finish the lyrics on these songs and get out and play them. Will definitely record them and post audio when it happens (probably late May, early June). I am so anxious for people to hear the two of us play this stuff.

Funny, I've been doing exactly the same thing! Just lately I've been utterly addicted to performing live, writing, doing acoustic duo's, etc..

I've been having the time of my life.

KLUGMO also nailed it when he said we basically feed off creating a reaction/emotion from the listener. Nothing makes my day more than my music / performance moving someone.
