He's certainly entitled to his opinion.

I disagree, for myself, but I see what he's talking about in the state of music today.

I guess I could wtite a bunch of pleasant-sounding random syllables & call it lyric, but I don't. I sweat over lyric more than I do the music, & it just frustrates me to hear so much vapid crap becoming popular.

Gimme something with meat in it, else I won't care much about it.

Byrne has written his share of great lyrics, as well as obscure and even obtuse lyrics. What I think he's saying is that the sound of the words being sung is more important than the actual words. If the words were more important than the music they would just be poetry.

I saw a thing where James Hetfield from Metallica scat sings the melody as he is working on songs or demos.
Then he goes back and fits words into the rythm and cadence of the melody.
Tries to turn it into something cohesive and meaningful of course, but starts with meaningless sounds and syllables.

That's an interesting way to write a song. Never tried that before, have to give that some thought...

That's how McCartney wrote "Yesterday". For months while he was writing it, he was singing "scrambled eggs" instead of "Yesterday".
