For the first time in 35 years there is not one concert I would pay to see at the main outdoor music spot here this season. Maybe "Happy Together", Flo and Eddie's reformed Turtles, but that's it. How is the concert schedule in your town?

Rock was dead back in '98, you didn't ever listen to Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals album?

Meh, I wouldn't have paid to see him then or now, so I guess the answer is Yes.

Depends on what you consider Rock n Roll these days. The great thing about music is the subjectivity. Just because you or I don't like something doesn't make it good or bad. If they're selling their sou...er... music and people are buying it... something has to be said for them.

That being said I love all types of music but there is a lot of stuff I don't listen to... not because it's bad... just because I don't like it. 8)

music has been getting dumber for centuries

Apparently with technology, the rate of decline just speeds up

At some point we hit absolute zero, where no song is more than 3.5 minutes, has more than 3 notes, none of the vocals or instruments are actually human, or at least the end product, and no song breaks the formula of:

intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro.

Once we hit that ground zero, the rebuilding can begin.

I gotta say, best show I have ever seen was manson on his antichrist superstar tour.
Small venue.

I wouldnt listen to him now or go to one of his shows though.

I guess if the accent of the beat is on the 2 and the 4, its rock n roll.
Cant say that its dead.

I like Rock & roll as it was defined in the 70s 80s but I stopped long ego listening to music based on any one genre, there is good music in any genre, having said that I'd go see a Rock act if there was one even though these days rock bands are old and many without their original members so instead of attending rock concerts in a filled arena with a rock band in its prime, we are left mostly with a leftover rock bands playing in a much modest venue sadly highlighting the changing of music and trends in time, I'd go see'em still.

What I don't miss from the good ol day’s is the 20 minute long drum, guitar or keyboard solo as it was customary couple decades ego in just about every concert, do you guys remember that?

Warning: Answering the above question will disclose your age.

Yeah his voice is either shot, or he hasn't been trying for the past two tours. The last two albums were only good if you understood the joke and themes surrounding them, but now that they're off interscope we could be seeing something much more out there from Manson and the gang. That's pretty cool that you got to see him in his prime though, that must have been awesome seeing ACSS live when the album was first released. I saw them in 2007 and the performed Antichrist Superstar, and it was one of the most powerful live songs I've heard.

Hell yeah.
They protested him here so they basically banned him from playing in Boise.
So he play about 30 miles out in a smaller town - Oconer field house I think is the name of the 'venue'.
There was probably about 500 or 600 people, standing room mostly, with some bleachers of all things on the side walls.
I know there was lots of people that couldnt get in.
He was really late getting started, and after a while rumors started circulating that he was going to have to cancel the show because of death threats.
They did have a fairly big stage in it, or brought one in, I dunno.
But anyway, they finally started and it was awesome.
After the finale, I just stood there stunned for like 5 minutes before I even moved or said anything.

I saw him again at Ozzfest a few years later, and it just wasnt the same - they were too far away, outside and there was still daylight.

I think Jimmy was asking about shows in your area, I have to be honest I dont hear of much in my area that I want to see and over the past couple of years other than a handful most of the things I go to are club gigs and they tend to be dance bands. I guess Ive gotten old but I dotn care to go to an original club and get my ears pounded on, even with ear plugs.

As far as rock being dead. I think for someone of my age that we long ago discovered rock music and anything new these days is just a copy of something weve heard a million times before. So if I was say 19 yrs old I might be finding some interesting music, whereas at 47 I dont hear much that really turns my ear. I prefer older music I grew up with and maybe discovering songs that I missed growing up. I hate to admit it but over the past few years the bands I tended to like were groups like STP Creed or Nickleback, that generic studio sound they have has been pleasing to my ears, for some reason.

Rock has been gasping & writhing in its death throes for 25-30 years, as ppl keep trying to reinvent it.

Actually I am going to see Jeff Beck and The Psychedelic Furs (both for the umpteenth time) but both of those shows are at smaller venues. I avoid the arena shows, but usually go to several DTE shows every year (the outdoor venue I was referring to). But this year the lineup is pathetic, same old Chicago/Doobie Brothers and Eddie Money crap. I know they're trying to save money by booking these B-tier bands but I will boycott this place if they don't get some better, more relevant acts.

I think music is made for the generations by the generations.

Our father's father hated their music too. Some of us are just getting older and can't relate maybe.

I'm personally stuck in the 90s musically. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP, and the like. If that ain't rock n roll neither is Led Zepplin damnit!

Kidding. I love all kinds of music but we all have our preferences.

There are some good bands out there today making new music... the "industry" has bastardized music IMO. You have to wander beyond the radio dial more than not these days to hear something that will appeal to you. Of course that is my opinion.
