Prison for violent criminals should be run like a boot camp.
With the exception of :
Violation of the rules results in hanging, not push ups.
Fight starts in the yard. Guard tower immediately shoots both the attacker and the victim.
( and no we don't send them to the hospital if they are just wounded, we shoot them again )
Along with anyone else stupid enough to remain standing.
Non violent offenders should be worked HARD and paid a minimum wage collectible upon "graduation" from "social school" and given an opportunity to live according to the law.
Repeat offenders from "social school", go to boot camp.

Good men should not have to be repeatedly preyed upon by violent criminals just because our government is to weak to deal with them appropriately:

sanshouheil,

I actually think what you describe would be a little, um, extreme, but it sounds more humane than what is described in the article. Certainly more fair.

And, while I think what you describe is extreme, it would be better than what we're doing now. Prison shouldn't be a vacation or a School of Crime. Violation of rules should result in real consequences (hanging is a bit much). Heck, I think permanent solitary confinement should be standard for anyone convicted of a violent crime and on a sentence of more then ten years. Maybe public lashings? Not as fatal, seriously painful.

The thing is, it should never be about revenge. It shouldn't even be about punishment. It should be about consequences and behavior modification. Oh, and about protecting innocent people.

I can agree with you for sure on the last line. Also behavior vs consequence.
But ... Punishment ? You bet. Removal from society ... permanently.
You want to reduce crime ? You reduce the number of criminals. Not increase the roll call of the gangs.
There should be no such thing as a repeat violent offender.

I will admit I see black and white. (right vs wrong)
There are no gray areas in my world.

Prisons are simply institutions for punishing wrong-doers by removing them from society. Many ppl in these institutions are non-violent offenders. To force them into violent situations is not only morally wrong, but inhumane.

Yes, prison life should be filled with drudgery & hard work, imo. Perhaps those who are physically capable should be made to pick fruit, work on road gangs, & such, thus removing our society's seeming need for an illegal alien work force to perform those duties.

However, when the prison staff is promoting violence between inmates, & when they commit unwarrented violence, something must be done to prevent it, & certainly there should also be punishment for those who have promoted & performed the violent acts.

There are many problems in our present capitalized prison system. Imho, this is definitely an area where the gov't, & ONLY the gov't, should be involved. Privatized prisons are dangerous on too many levels to list, & they save our society no real money in the long run.

According to Rome, JESUS was a criminal.
According to King george , Washington,Jeffeson,Franklin,Hancock ,were all absolute criminals.
We have to weigh much , and I don't think I am qualified to sit in judgement.

NAH,,, Just hang them all and let God sort it out.
[just kidding]

Jesus ran the bankers out of the temple with a whip.
I don't recall anything about him robbing them in the process.

Seriously though:
In order to maintain a society some set of laws must be in place and enforced.
The biggest issue IMO with the justice system of America is the enforcement issue.
There should never be an opportunity for "repeat offender" when it comes to acts of violence perpetrated against innocent persons.
