My mistake...

So, in trying to save $ on groceries, I bought a big ol' cheap turkey, figuring to munch on it for a buncha days.

When I cooked it, I was surprized to see that it was done a whole hour earlier than I'd expected. I put some potatoes in to bake, & worked on the rest of my family's meal. After 40 minutes or so, I checked the potatoes, only to find they weren't done. This puzzled me, until I looked up & discovered that I'd cooked the turkey on the Broiler setting, instead of bake. So the top of the bird was done, but I had my suspicions about the bottom...so I put it in for the extra hour, & now it's dried out as bad as any I've ever eaten.

I'm a big fat dummy, ain't I?

I'm so mad I could spit.

Still, I'm gonna eat the damned thing if it kills me! It does make a pretty good sandwich...if a little chewy...maybe it'll work in soup?

I don't make too many mistakes in the kitchen, but when I do make one, it's a doooooooozy!

I've heard someone called a turkey before, and a jerk, but never a turkey jerky.

My ex-wife cooked our first turkey with the bag of giblets and neck still inside. Then again she burned down our kitchen cooking french fries.

Funny you should mention that, Chris. There were 4 out there this morning, but I had to leave to do a small job.

No big loss, though. they were small. (& young & tender)

No biggy.
Just get some veg and dump the thing in a crock pot with about an inch and a half of chicken stock or perhaps some water with stock cubes + veg and put it in the oven on a fairly low heat. You could add thinly chopped onions too if you want which will give it a nice flavor.

The bit you cooked at the top will come out like jerky, nice and chewy, the rest will be good too.

Actually, it wasn't all that bad. The legs were the toughest part. The breast was a lil dry, but the thighs are perfect. Makes good sandwiches. The gravy is pretty damned good, too.

I'm still watching for them deer! Need more free meat!

I think I'm gonna hafta start up rabbit prpduction again. I did that when Ian was a little guy to save money. Jace is almost at the age to start him on chores, like feeding the rabbits...maybe another year from now, LOL, he isn't even three, yet.

The sooner you get them doing stuff every day, the easier it gets when they get older, imho. When they're really young, they LIKE the chores, at 1st. They get so proud & stuff. Right now Jace's job is to let the dogs in, sometimes the cats, too. He gets excited when I let 'em out, & even more so when I ask him to let 'em out.

Ian was feeding the rabbits at age 4. I think that was part of what made him a responsible adult...He also learned at a young age where meat comes from. He developed attachments to the breeders, & often searched the yard for special weedy treats for his favorites. He also learned to stay away from the bucks...heh heh heh

Nope I agree Phil.
I was always doing chores from a very early age in all areas. It does make you a better person for certain so long as you say you start off early.

A good dose of responsibility never hurt anyone did it.

Rabbits ??

I love rabbit, but dang they stink when you clean em. :(

I usually go for the swampers, local LARGE subspecies of the cottontail.

I've heard domestic rabbits are a pain in the arse.

Is that true Phil ??

Like to do a big chicken coop too.
