We started tracking last Friday. So far it's going REALLY good. After drum tracks and 1st rhythm guitars, we are 10-hours ahead of schedule. Which for those of you who know, that's pretty freaking amazing.

Image

On the first day, Jordan finished drum tracks for all 12-songs in 6- hours!! No scratch tracks, all on the click. I think this picture is very much earned. He is a champ!!

Image

Iz prepping for our little BBQ session on Jordan's day. We're pretty much gonna do this every session. Hahaha. You gotta make a party of it and feel at home. It just makes the days go by easy.

Image
Ryan did the actual cooking. His steaks were AWESOME!! He's a great cook outside of being a great musician.

Yesterday was Ryan's rhythm guitar tracking. Here's the guitar spread we were working with:

Image

2- Squiers, a Hamer, and an Epiphone. Of course the Squiers and Hamer are customized, the Epiphone is just baddass stock. Very vintage sounding as well.

The amp spread:

Fender 85 SS, Roland JC-50 SS, and a Fender Hot Rod DeVille. All were hooked up simultaneously for each track. Three killer sounds going on at once!! The clean channel possibilities between the amps and guitars were pretty much limitless. We were all amazed at the vintage tones we were able to create for Ryan. Like kids in a candy store!!

Image

Ryan tracking with his Epiphone. He did all of his rhythm tracking in 5-hours!! Just cruised through all of it pretty easily. A few punch-ins here and there, and that was it. If you look to the right, we took the DeVille and created a reverb chamber with it. Still had all 3 working at once.

Image

Our producer Brian checking out my DeVille. If you look behind him, you'll see he has a Fender Deluxe. I was showing the difference between modern and NOS preamp tubes. I had a spread of my heavyweights installed in mine. Needless to say, he became a big believer real fast!! He told me more than once, he couldn't believe I had such a good clean channel just by re-tubing. I'm gonna help him re-tube his Deluxe before all of this is over.

I continue my tracking on Saturday. We have a week break for a show coming up. I did set up and do a little yesterday. I finished 4-tracks after Ryan was done. That's 16 guitar tracks in one day, all to the click!! Not bad at all!! For my tracking we created dual reverb chambers with the Fender 85 and Roland, and used my DeVille as the main dry recording. The sound in the room was freaking incredible!!

I'll keep you guys posted as the album gets recorded. But so far, it's going better than expected. We're going to try to finish the rest of my tracks and IZ's Ukulele tracks on Saturday to make up even more time. The more time we make up, the more candy we can add at the end to really make it an interesting Album.

Peace all!!

Ahead of schedule? That unheard of in the studios I've been in. LOL

Way to go, Shredd! Kudos to your entire band. I want a steak!

If you know EXACTLY what you're doing on each song and what you want to record you should be at least on schedule. Too many people go into a studio without a game plan. You guys know what you're doing and it shows...Hey the barbecue is a great idea, not sure if anybody in our band cooks. I'll have to invite my friend John to cook for us at our next studio session....

Hey, I noticed you'd posted about tubes on here before. I have a stock '62 Deluxe. What would you suggest for retubing?

And congrats on the excellent studio work going on. Bob's right. Ya'll are certainly doing things the right way.

It's hard for me to say without knowing the tube functions. Are you talking about one of these?

http://www.petesrareguitars.com/product ... -1962.html

If so, that's one badass MF-er..

If you can tell me the tube functions, it would help a lot. I need to know how many pre-tubes and what they account for.

I really do hate giving generalized advice. I personally would rather discuss this more in depth and in private and not on the boards. You can get a hold of me at facebook.com/shred

Add me as a friend, we'll swap e-mails.

Day 3:

Yesterday we finished all of the guitar rhythm tracks and Uke tracks.

I did the two songs I wrote for the CD with my Fender '57 RI. It's been through a lot of battles. But still plays and sounds like a champ.

Image

This is a guy named Fuzz. He stopped by to drop off a cool little thing for us to use as a cool effect for an intro. He also had his Cigar Box guitar with him. It was fun to mess around with. He built it in his garage.

Image

This is what Fuzz was dropping off for us.

Image

Image

It's a little Marlboro box amp. We wanted a transistor radio sound for one of the intros. This little guy worked great for the effect.

Ryan finished up one more song.

Image

Then it was time for Iz to lay down his Uke tracks. It really blended the guitar sounds together nicely.

Image

Of course, we had our little BBQ session. Even though it was raining. Hahaha. Ryan and Jordan backed their SUVs up together and opened the back hatches to shield the rain.

Image

Iz getting his Burger between tracks.

Image

And that was basically a wrap for the day. Next session will be to lay down the Bass tracks. It's moving along just fine. Bass, Keys, and all guitar leads and effects should be done by the end of Saturday (show on Saturday as well. Oooof!! That's gonna be a long day). Then we start vocals on Sunday.
