There's a bunch of Youtube videos showing people playing the hurdy gurdy. Sounds like a cross between a fiddle, viola, bagpipes, etc. Looks like a handful to play well. I've never seen anybody playing one in any contemporary genrres (rock, country, blues, jazz,etc.). Has a very interesting sound.

I actually saw a guy playing one on the first Page&Plant tour in Oakland. It was very cool. It's the sort of instrument - in my mind - that could be magic in the right hands. It's completely inappropriate for rock and roll, so I think some rocker should find a way to use it.
