A while back, I started a project I call "Under the Microscope". I've gone through the songs that I've recorded and written behind the scenes anecdotes about each one. I had put it away for a while, but today, while I had some free time, I had an idea about expanding it. So, I picked it back up and re-read what I had written. And...I'm very pleased with it. It's cool to be reminded of some of the events and factors that helped to shape each song. I also use it to record reactions to my songs. Anybody else keep any notes on their original material? Just curious.
Anyway, I contacted the studio today about continuing the new material that I started early last year (man, it sucks to get sidetracked!), so I'll have some new songs to add to the collection before long. In the meantime, I've started laying down my own personal band history. This too, is proving to be quite interesting, although I have to say, I'm in the early stages of it right now, and thinking back twenty years is a hell of a lot of work. The old memory isn't what it used to be!
When it's done, I'm hoping to include it as part of a merch package: I'll put it in along with the CD's it covers, a T-shirt with my ugly mug, a press photo and some bumper stickers...all for the low, low price of $1000!! (j/k). Anyway, what do y'all think?

Sounds like some good ideas!

I always saw you as a singer/songwriter type in the "spirit" of Dylan, or James Taylor, but with your own style. And what you are wanting to do, fits in perfectly with that. Something personal. Telling stories. Intimate.

Gives that much more value to the whole thing, and brings people into your life and history.

Go for it!

It's a great idea even just from a personal standpoint.
I have kept most, but sadly, not all the scraps of song memorabilia.
But taking notes, like a journal, I should have done that too.
I wish I had the lumber receipts and Sonic bags with the beginnings of songs scrawled on them still. Sadly my forethought was lacking. (as usual)
I had many volumes of notes diaries letters drawings and information I had accumulated over about 15 years of Martial studies.
Sadly, in a fit of transcendental stupidity I burned them all one day.
f**k, what was I thinking.

I found a disc the other day and shoved it in my pc...it was a BUNCH of lyrics from songs that I haven't messed with in years. I'm always doing stuff like that-I've got a pretty good case of OCD. I will make the same list four or five times each in five or six different notebooks, and each list HAS to have an even # of entries-If I write a list, even of household chores, I'll bust my brain trying to think of something to add if I don't have an even #.
Over the years, I've buiilt a really disorganized collection of stats on myself...

Great idea. I wish I had saved more pics, newspaper clippings, recordings (shitty ones, I know) and stuff from my early days of playing. Now they're just foggy memories and I'd be hard pressed to put them in order. That's why I don't want to make it big...I'd sound like an idiot in an interview. :)

Always keep a notebook of your ideas.

Write down everything.

IT does come in handy.

I used to do that. Then I lost the notebook. I lose everything!
