I've always liked Eddie.

I just hated him when he stole my intended future girlfriend from me...

Valerie Bertinelli ;-)

But...

The only problem with that style, these days, is that when Eddie did it, it was fresh, and he was the best at it... He didn't INVENT it, but he certainly POPULARIZED it. But that was way back in the late 70's and early 80's. Everyone has heard it repeated by countless guitarists for 30 years now.

That's the problem with those guitarists who depend on it.

But, there will always be hammer-on's pull-offs - tapping... Hell, if you want to be fair about it... Paganini probably invented the technique, when he used it on... VIOLIN, not long ago in the uhh.... 1800's

So there will always be a place for it.

But after the overkill of the 80's and 90's... It's gotta be used sparingly and mixed in with other things.

An interesting question...

"Has the electric guitar done all it can do? Or will someone come along AGAIN and find a way to bring new juice out of it?"

I have seen so many things done on guitar in my lifetime... you wonder if there is a point where nothing new can be discovered?

Craig, you're right - BUT...

Eddies songs (differentiating them from the wanking of Eruption) still hold up today. And you know why? Because he WASN'T a one-trick pony!

If you listen to the rest of his music - the guy was a BRILLIANT rhythm player too. He came up with some great, great rhythm parts. And a lot of times his solos were very diverse and often simplistic - he didn't tap away and go Eruption-mania on everything. He wrote some really memorable solos with lots of melody.

The only thing that the wanking of Eruption does is prove that you know technique. Great - that makes you one of many. But the great guitar players actually know how to DO SOMETHING with their technical expertise... that's what I love.

I loved guys like Vito Bratta... He was a desciple of Eddie, but the guy wrote some really tasteful stuff when he was in White Lion. I loved his style. To this day, his Rhythm stuff still impresses me more than most players. He was always throwing in little licks and techniques to make the song come alive, even during a verse...

I saw their first tour. And several subsequent concerts. EVH is an awesome player. I love the way he'd mix and match the playing styles.
I love to hear those blazing riffs taps and pinch. As they mingle mix and flow with a melody. Though amazed by his skills, I tire of the "wanking" pretty quick.
Still, it be nice if I could wank like that.
A little stuck in here and there tastefully would be cool.

I saw VH back when Roth was still in the band, early 80's. Eddie was pretty good but nowhere near as good as the studio recordings. And Diamond Dave just sucked. I lost interest in them after that.

Hey Sean, I saw you posted that in the other topic, and sorry if I gave the impression of ignoring it, but by posting it there, you clearly (as clearly as the other guy) missed the entire point I was making. Maybe that was my fault for not being more specific when making the point, but I clarified it in a later reply, so hopefully that helped, although I haven't checked back in that thread yet.

So, as far as eddie goes, colors was right on the points that eddie really brought a LOT to the table, he was far more versatile as a lead player than most (although the video you posted is very repetitive playing, WAY too much hammer-on's). Eddie was also a fantastic rhythm player, as also noted in colors post.

What can anyone today bring to the world of shred guitar that hasn't been done? Even Dragonforce are (technically) reduced to barfing up old used and overdone riffs from days long past. There's certainly roads that are untraveled, but you need to be a supreme innovator in the likes of EVH or SRV or something to even have a chance at finding it, honing it, refining it, and properly exploiting it... if you know what I mean.

The guitarist in my first 3 bands, the best man at my wedding played eruption like that when he was 14. REALLY well. That was in 87. He applied that skill set and grew and grew. And occasionally whips out the "big guns" in tiny tasteful displays of power. This is an album he released with his band in 04.

Sound like someone familiar, EVH if you like, but please, please, please cultivate your own UNIQUE sound/style from that which originally attracted YOU to the music.

Have you seen John Denner?

He only has 1 arm. I caught his act on Howard Stern.

Warning this will humble you..

audio track from show..

It looks worse if you want to actually see it.

Not his show appearance though.. He was erm very interesting to see to him play..lol

You see now see the reason for "unique perspective" on everything, right?

The cliche' is "often imitated, but never duplicated".

Good luck to you.

Pretty cool Capt.

Howard's crew cracks me up!

And I like that this guy actually responds back to the people commenting his videos! That's awesome!

Thanks for sharing!
