Get out more

PostPosted: Sun Jan 21, 2007 5:07 pm
I agree that putting a band together is hard and i think now harder than ever and it doesnt get any easyer as we get older ,I gotta say this ,you gotta go out and look for people ,they will not come for you.
It is a job so treat it like one ,another thing is do some audtions go try out for other bands ,you can find other like minded people this way i have .
I think that all the styles of dont help either ,when i was a kid i played in my granddads country band ,there were only two kinds of bands country bands and western bands, now there are so many styles of music it is crazy .
All musicans are a pain in the ass,me, you ,all of us

I've had this same problem in Boston, NY, Buffalo, Toronto, Vegas, Memphis, Lexington... It's everywhere.

I've worked with probably 150 musicians, tried out thousands, and I'd say that I've found 5 good musicians. Oddly enough, of the 5 good ones, 3 were bassists and 1 was a drummer... go figure, the dime-a dozen guitarists don't even rate!

Good To Know

It's good to know that we are actually a chosen few.. those who actually have talent.. WANT to use it.. WILL work for our art and know that it takes more than WANTING to be a musician to actually be one.
I guess I am a glass half full kind of person.
But when you find the right people.. then it's sincere and freaking awesome.. if was easy.. everybody would be a ROCKSTAR.
We can't have that .. now can we.. ???
Stay on course.. keep looking.. those who should ...WILL .. find the right people to make that beautiful music.
The others.. can just keep workin' 9-5... dream.. and listen...

Well my band is falling apart at the seems right now. We are just a bunch of middle aged guys with families. It looks like personalities are not meshing and picking songs is worse then pulling teeth. Everyone wants to do something different. Back to the drawing board.

I know the feeling.

When I was in my teens, I was in two bands at the same time. I had lots of people to play with, but the problem was that I was a worthless musician. I had studied music for 7 years and I loved to play, the problem was that my playing had no focus and worst of all, no heart. I just copied whatever metal or blues lick amused me. I was just playing to either amuse myself or kill time.

Time rolled on and I gave up playing.

Here I am 15 years later and I am playing again. NOW I have the elements that I was missing in my teens. I have done some real living and made some real mistakes and have gained a little real wisdom. Now, I have something to genuinely say in my playing. Now, I play with a real sense of purpose and feeling. But now that I have what I was missing before...

I have no one to play with.

It doesn't help that I am Oklahoma, which is pretty much a crossroads between country and Texas blues, and I am trying to put together a Slowcore/Nu-gaze project.

But what is life without it's little challenges?

I think it will all come together, as long as we keep our focus and don't lose faith.

bluesman25 wrote:I have a band, but they only want to practice about once a month...and refuse to travel for gigs. What's that about? I have a home studio and have been trying to get them to help me on the demo but they show absolutely no interest. If I had a bandmate with a studio I'd be there CONSTANTLY to work on whatever project imaginable.

So I do what everybody does. I look for others to replace them. In searching for more motivated players that are actually INTERESTED in being a musician, I face the same problem in finding those...that can play...in my area... that play anything remotely close to my style of music.

I scan musician classifieds every night for openings, not just in my area but even cities in my surrounding states. I'm so dedicated I'd pack up and move to another state for a promising working band. I've been doing this for like 2 years now...everything from gigfinder to bandmix to myspace.

...nuts so far

I could understand the problem more easily if I were a hack, but I majored in jazz guitar performance for 4 years in college. Still though, finding work or musicians willing to work is next to impossible.

What's sad is that there are thousands out there just like us with the same problem. It's a cruel irony really.

Nice stuff BM, If you looking for people to collaborate with on recording projects, check out http://www.musicianscollaboration.com. It's all about collaboration and the players are not only great but they are hella nice. No egos. Just check the MP3 and you hear some amazing musicians, singers, songwriters, sound engineers etc.

I have been through the regimend of heavy rehearsing and hard long drives to a gig . In all that for someone who loves to sing and have a great time getting a crowd going ,living in a van or hotel no sleep introduction to drugs . It was going to kill me , so I steppped back and looked at was really the impotant thing of it all the feeling in your gut when you can get a crowd to sing, jump around with you. So I gave up the ruckus and settle back ito a life and family missing the feeling of the stage and when you can sing a song perfect till it gives you goose bumps.but now I want to have fun with a few guys who want to have fun to I mean play a song till you feel like all in one musical awareness. I have been there once . You feel so powerful . BUT today everyone wants to go for the gusto and become a big band they forget where it comes from first. great bands come from people who see that ... ONENESS. then what comes will come...ROCK ON EVERYONE

Oh this is simple. The reason it's hard to find good bad members is because 90% of all good, successful bands happened by accident or were all good friends for a long time. It's not so much having a band with a lot of talent, but also having a band with a lot of dedication and 'brotherhood' (or sisterhood for you lady rockers).

I recently found this out while playing with my band Detox. We are a great band musically, but once the stagelights are off and the music stops, we go home, don't really speak again til next practice. And we have already lost two guitarists. I feel it's because there is no 'brotherhood' no true friendship, it all lies within the band.

So, thats why it's so difficult to FIND good band members, the good ones usually will find you, and it's probably not going to be through auditions or posting bullitens, etc. etc. Trust me, I'm still looking for another band myself, but so far sites like these, posting flyers in local music shops, and 'whoring' on myspace hasn't helped.

I think its hard everywhere you go. You just gotta keep networking, posting ads, auditioning people and learn how to filter people out better. Same boat here. I live in Atlanta, and Atlanta has zillions of rock players but ironically produces very little original alternative rock output (Athens is the exception).

But I think we are lucky to have all this technology. I have weeded a lot of prospects out just by going to their myspace or getting their mp3 samples by email.

Dont give up and also dont forget that not everyone will think your music is great.
