This is funny as heck (I am a progressive rock fan; I can laugh at myself)

But I am posting this because there is specifically something in there for you that I thought you'd get a kick out of too :)

Progressive Rock, the only rock genre where "flute solo" has any meaning. Love...It!

Colors,

Got a kick out of that link!

Mary,

When The Blues Project (an extremely progressive band) recorded "Flute Thing" in the mid 60's, the now redundant term "PROGRESSIVE ROCK" was not yet evolved into the lexicon of rock terminology.

I am sure that we could conjure up a short list of flute tunes in other rock genres as well.....

Marshall Tucker Band (country rock)
Moody Blues (60's to new millenium supergroup rock)
Jon Luc Ponty (rock fusion)
The Troggs (60's top 40 rock)
and, of course,
The cool flute playin' in Association's great pop rock classic, ironically titled,... ALONG COMES MARY! (this is now getting sorta scary!)

later,
Howlin'

Oh hey, and what about "Crossed Eyed Mary???"
Jean Luc Ponty, although I don't know a bunch about him, was a key component in inspiring me to make music my career. As a kid, it was important to see that it required some kind of intelligence and creativity to produce modern music. Funny, but it was the progeressive rockers...namely Yes...that had more influence on my than Beethoven.

And now, of the classical musical genres, I prefer music closer to avante gard ( sp?)

Howlin', I've done a cover or two on the Marshall Tucker Band and JT. I would love to be in a Jethro Tull Tibute band. That would take a lot of work.

I was compelled to post this flute solo

Hey Howlin, I added this link in the post right above yours. Yeah, I remember this band. They are quite hip. They just needed Mary to come along with a real flute.

Mary,
After giving it a bit more thought, I decided that we are being a wee bit hard on the time honored recorder . If I could play mine as good as this lady plays hers, I could be jammin with Keith Jarrett too! :D

Check 'em out....

You know, you are right...it is easy to think of the recorder as a toy or a flute wannabe but it is a legit instrument. As a matter of fact I dabbled in the thought of buying a couple of various sized recorders ( bass and soprano ) and join a recorder club here in Orange CA. Now you've stirred my interest in getting one or two of these. They may even come in handy in my flute choir.

Howlin, you know Keith Jarret???You are hip, my man

I have a fruitwood concert quality recorder. I also have the ability to make it sound way worse than the lil plastic ones they gave you in elementary school.

I don't know Keith personally,

however

I do know two of his brothers, as one is an old classmate of mine (a decent guitar player and showman) and the other an excellent drummer.

PS I finally found my favorite KJ song on You- Tube! :D
Thought you might enjoy it, definitely worth a listen.
