Great Night for JW123

I went into the recording studio last night for 3 hours and laid down 5 original songs.

Decided to approach it old school.

We lined my CORT acoustic into the board, set up a little condenser mic on the neck and another condenser on the guitar body, then Andy close miced the vocal with an SM 57 of all things.

I just sat down and played thru the songs a couple of times and then just laid them down. Were there mistakes, well hell yea, do I care at this point well hell no. These are kinda coutry acoustic singer songwriter songs. Im going back in tonight and lay down a couple more originals and then a few covers just for the hell of it.

Once I get them mixed I will put them up, and some pictures of the recording area.

Its really kinda neat and a lot of pressure to sit down and record this way, but this is the way Elvis, Johnny Cash and guys like that did it in the old Sun studio days. I just thougth lets simplify the process and I will get as many down at a time as possible instead of trying to build them up.

Anyway I was stoked when I got in last night and looking forward to another session tonight. You guys have a Great Day!

I like that approach, JW. Not so much pressure.

Glad you're kickin' ass both on stage & off. Ya GOTTA respect that!

You are a musician's musician, imho.

Even the Beatle's "St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album was only done on 4 tracks. Can you imagine that?

Way to John!

We're stoked for you brother!

Can't wait to hear your original songs!

Did you bring your girlfriend into the studio with you? Careful, I got married last time I did that! LOL - But it is usually exciting for them, if the studio looks professional.

Have you ever written anything for your son? Or other family? This would be a good time to get that laid down too, for posterity. You never know when you will get back, once you get all these laid down.

Anyway, really excited for you!

Now George needs to get his band in there next! :-)

Sweet John, can't wait to hear them. I think stripping a song down to its essence is the way to record, initially anyway. You can always add stuff or re-record them later.

Thanks guys, Ive just always played in loud rock bands and its kinda cool to just lay it on yourself and got for it.

Craig my GF is traveling in GA w her sales job this week, otherwise I wouldnt be in the studio. But I did call her and let her listen into a couple of songs that involve her. Crazy thing this morning I went to work with my guitar in the truck and got this idea for a song. It was so nice that I went out back and fleshed the whole song out. Its about us so Im going to record it tonight with her on the line of course.

Im finding that whenever I get inspiration its best for me to just drop everything and write or put songs down while I have the initial inspiration. Too often, we leave these things hanging, I think if you are serious about the craft you will develop a lifestyle that allows you to pursue it. If you cant do this in your life then maybe you should find another hobby. My whole life Ive written songs and they are just a reflection of a moment in time for me. Once the moment passes, its gone forever.

These recordings arent that slick, arent as slick as I would like them, but hopefully they have that emotional thing that makes a song special in some way.

I also feel like if a song has any merit it shouldnt have to be glossed over to be good. Its all about sending an emotion to a listener, and for me thats even if its just one litener, then I feel like Ive doing what I should do.

Hopefully me putting up post like this will help inspire others to just go with their gut and play some music.

Once again thanks for the support and props guys!

bandmix can be a cool place to share with others.

That's precisely why I bought an H2 Zoom. So I could get stuff down the moment the inspiration hits.

Congrats JW - glad you are enjoying what you're doing man!

JW.
It's really good to hear from someone doing something out there. You, Crip, Paul, Halo. Soon to be Craig, are like lanterns in a dark world so share a little more please.

I loved the idea that RM posed when playing live online. Ok it didn't work out first time but that doesn't mean it does not work.

Kudos to all.

Craig, heres my inspiration for some stuff Im writting these days.

This is Angie my girlfriend, I will definitely have her on the phone tonight listening in on a couple of songs. I dont think you will hear any bells in the near future, she and I arent really into the marriage thing, but you just never know now, Do Ya?

A jam session would be cool, with or wothout bells!

On another note, I just got word from my son that he scored a 31 on his ACT. He is a 17yr old junior in HS, he is awesome. I dont even have to say anything about grades to him, he just does it for himself. My kids were raised to be responsible for their own actions and in his case he has excelled. Its strange having a rocker dad like me that he is so studious.

But Im very proud of him and all his accomplishments, anyway I have to go and hit the recording studio, talk to you guys tomorrow!

Chippy, I was going to say something positive about JW sharing some of his personal music, something like greeeeeaaat. But after I read your last post I forgot what I wanted to say, Those damn@%$#&*( CANADIENS ) again.
If JW Puts up some new material I will too.
You want music, ok. Now let me go start a post about how @#$^&^ up credit card companies are.
