Other than owning a P.A., this is what I consider the biggest logistical hurdle to getting a band together and maintaining it. Where to hold band practice?

Usually it's someone's house or shop, but lately I've been trying to figure out if there's commercial space or something available for bands to rehearse.

What do you guys do? Do any of you rent a space?

We formed and practiced after hours in my MMA gym.
When I "retired" from that I built a shop on my place.
It costs me about $500.00 a month. But in a few years it will be paid for.
Some months it's a real $ stretch, but thats life.

The band that I rehearsed with held rehearsal in a rehearsal studio. Rental of the studio is very reasonable...something like 12.00 and hour. You can rent their equipment also which saves time. That is where I did all my recordings in my profile.

Every band I've ever been in has had one or more members who could allow practice at their place. Guess I've been lucky that I've never been in one where all the members live in apartments & condos, eh?

Yeah, with my first band I did that as well. We rented a rehearsal space from a local studio there and split it 4 ways. They provided drums and amps if we wanted, and mics, pa, etc...

It was definitely worth it.

Of course these days, every penny counts.

A PA? I would have thought Drums were the largest and most difficult to seat depending on the player and his style of course?

Oh I forgot we don't need drummers anymore do we Korg/Roland/Soft Synth/Cubase/Logic/Pro Tools/Audacity/Numerous other widgets...

We always rented a place but I note as you say its like everything else here, always at someone's house. Never been totally comfortable with that because you tend to relax too much.

WRONG! Whenever I'm in the studio with one band or another, my time has been very limited.... God forbid you have trouble with a certain section and you all have to repeat till it's right... Studio time here is usually limited to 2 hours...There's: set-up... smoke breaks and bullsh!t! My new band leaves all their stuff at my house I own the pa columns and they own everything else.... we play up to 4-5 hours with minimum BS! We get a ton more done in my basement than we ever did in any studio and I'd rather play through my stuff anyway because my settings are crucial!

I've always owned a PA and hosted rehearsals. That's the control freak coming out (I'm also the one that books gigs, organizes practice, makes set lists, writes and arranges 99% of the music and produces all the recordings. See what I mean).

I suppose Jimmy. I don't have anything against practising at home, done it many times and been in your position as regards booking things almost all of the time.

I've just found it in my case anyway to be an excuse for the host to have a beer, or get smacked/high, eat shrooms or whatever. I also don't like playing on other people kits but then its a drum kit, has skins and all I need to know is my part. After all drums have highs and lows too which is often forgotten by you strings people I guess that's my angle on it anyway.

We don't party like we did in the old days, my singer has acid reflux and can't drink Jack anymore. I rarely have more than a few, I have too much to do the next day.

Most bands I've been in had rehearsals at the drummers house. Current one we rehears at vals.. drummer has multiple sets so not a big deal.

Ive only ever been in one band that rented a space, it was hourly, and after a couple nights of them showing up and having not learned or practiced their parts, I had to leave.

I got tired of drummers lugging their crap in and out so I just bought a kit for the studio. Most drummers still bring their own snare or cymbals but it helps the whole setup process.
