Ok I know this will stir a few thoughts, especially here.

I have a couple of numbers in the pipe. Again I'm way off completing anything at this point, however..........

These particular numbers are highly provocative in the sense that they cover real events that happen in our world. I fully intend to be graphic both in vox and effects on these numbers.

Today you cannot watch anything that has swearing without a bleep or that part of the commentary being removed and while I understand why I don't understand the timing of these shows in the first place? I mean are your kids up at 5:00 pm? Heck yeah!

Music is a slightly different arena though. Punk Rock is well known for swearing, spitting and generally being against any government in the early years anyway, (when it was real).

1 track is just, well there is just a lot of bad language, vial in your face commentary and such....
The other covers something that really bothers me about life with younger people.

In short neither are for younger ears but its something that bothers me and if it bothers me I have to say it bothers me....

Do you think this a wrong approach in music? I don't want to become known for them but I need to get them out.

Thoughts please?

With your mind, Chippy, I know that you can voice your thoughts in ways that, while the meaning could be considered to be offensive, the actual wording of those thoughts can seem very vanilla. I've done that successfully, myself, quite a few times, believe it or not.

Still, there is a place for just "letting it all out." In adult groups, it's often considered clever or outrageously funny or whatever.

The thing that irks me about some censorship, is the WalMart approach, where they'll censor music, but allow movies & books to be displayed & sold to ppl of all ages that have the exact same "offensive" content as the music they're so worried about.

I've written a lot of stuff. Some of it just isn't for prepubescent ears, cuz they're likely to pick up on the flow of the lyric & sing it or speak it themselves. That is not something that I would like. I try not to expose them to that material, but once it's recorded & distributed, I know I have no control over who gets to hear it. That bugs me a bit, & I've been trying to keep a little less of the offensive content in my music because of that.

I doubt that I've helped in any way, but I hear you, & think about these things, myself. Sometimes it's a fine line we tread, ain't it?

Chippy, it sounds like you're already apologizing for something you haven't done yet. You're just too nice a guy.
Seriously, if this is weighing heavily on you and you feel the need to get it out, do it. Don't worry about what others will think. Think about it this way, if every songwriter of all time had been concerned about offending others with their music, what would music be like now? The first step is getting your project done to a point that it is pleasing to you, and you alone. Then get some of your closer friends to give it a listen and see what they think (you can always e-mail it to me, and others that you know on here and other places). If you and others feel it's something the world needs to hear, put it out on the net for all. Baby steps, man, baby steps.
If nothing else, just getting it done for yourself may do wonders. I know I have written some songs that are so offensive that, when I wrote them, I knew I wouldn't send them anywhere. But it sure felt good writing them, and sharing with a few good friends that have a warped sense of humor like me. For example, one song I wrote was pretty and started out like any love song you've ever heard, but towards the end, it's about slipping her a rufee (sp. ?) in her drink. Never recorded it, didn't even want to. Never performed it live, just showed it to some close friends and they all laughed and said, "Oh, that's bad! Even for you."
It wasn't about entertainment at all. It just came to me and I laughed while writing it down, and now it is just a memory in the past.
Your song sounds more like it may be offensive to others because it isn't politically correct and has some swearing in it. That fits the description of a lot of some of the most controversial, yet thought provoking music out there which would have been a shame if it hadn't been written. Look at Frank Zappa. Lot's of foul language, some was just for humor, some was to get people thinking. Glad it's out there. Maybe some day people will be talking about your works that way.

Yeah, it seems like you're kinda stuck in that "self-censorship" mode. Write it, & do like Jeff says. I agree with him 100% on this one. If it works out, great, & if it doesn't, you got it out of your system & can move on to other projects. It's tough when your mind is stuck on something & won't let it go.

I got my Gitbox out at work one day a few years ago. Always take it when allowed? I was kinda frustrated you could say. (Cough!). Anyway I started up on one and afterwards one of my bosses said he could get me a gig playing no problem LOL!

I was kinda surprised. It was just one guitar and me. That's not how its supposed to be. (pardon the pun).

Thanks for the replies folks. I think there are a lot of points here which perhaps I'll stay away from for now but all are very good indeed. I didn't even consider books! There's a thought huh?

That being said Ray often "alters" my harsh lyrics.
I think for the best.
But thats us deciding what we will say and not say. Not someone else.

I don't think you can alter them can you? I mean they are in your head and so far as I know that cannot be changed. (Today at least).

Sometimes when I write Chippy. Because it is a spontanious flow of though (for the most part) I will occasionally add some "colorfull"
language.
Ray can often just delete these from the script without any loss of the meaning or emotion.

You have to remember, I am a tad "hot blooded" thats why they keep me away from the mic

I remember the FUGS. Because it was Post 60's everyone thought they were another MOD group in the late 60's until of course when people dug out the song they heard odd lyrics.

They were some good years weren't they.
