my wife pointed this song out to me... it's called lorena (her name), and something about johns voice on this song... so pure and natural...

Outstanding. Was that song from the Civil War era? I noticed they were showing pics from that era. Did you know that the Civil War was the first war where many photographs were taken. I've got a huge book that has hundreds of Civil War photographs. It's fascinating and I look at that book often. Sorry to digress. Thanks for sharing that with us, it's a VERY good video, worth checking out.

absolutely my pleasure. my wife turned me on to it. yes, it's a civil war song... but obviously a recent rendition. didn't know civil war was first war to have photos.
photos from that era fascinate me too.

I'd like to hear it the way it was played back then. As I understand it, the "roll" style of bluegrass picking is a much more recent thing. Back then, it was played claw-hammer style.
Damned few claw-hammer banjoers these days, though...
Damn that pesky bluegrass for making another style obsolete!

agreed... wish I could hear it in it's original form...
but I love the banjo roll... no coincidence albert lee is prob in my top 10 gtr players... he's got that style locked up.
my wife was askin if I could play the banjo... I said " I've played them b4 and all it would take is a little getting used to the tuning and voilla... but alas I have no banjo (hint hint)".
