A Reuters report from Sao Paulo, Brazil, tells of a judge inspecting a local prison who found nothing in one watchtower but a straw scarecrow, dressed in a guards' uniform, rifle in arms "guarding" 720 prisoners.

well, frankly bob, over in brazil... the streets are just as deadly as the prisons - iow I don't think it'll make a pinch of sh*t of difference if there's 720 more criminals at large.

still -interesting story.

here in az they are real creative on how to save tax dollars they don't have cause the states bankrupt.
tent city is a real jail out in the desert where it reaches 120 regularly and 128 occasionally. spoiled baloney and pink underwear await you during your stay.

Do you mean the prisoners have to wear pink underwear? I guess if they escape and that's all they have on they would get caught real easy. Maybe we should require illegal immigrants to come into the country wearing pink underwear.

They should also experiment with the prison uniforms. An old friend of mine spent time in prison. He told me that one of his cellmates used to fart all the time. Maybe they could invent a carbon-lined pink underwear to absorb the malodorous flatus, thus serving two beneficial purposes...

We don't want the sheriff in pink undies, he would be too conspicuous. We need to reserve the pink undies for the bad guys.

I believe you're talking about capital punishment. Capital punishment has never been proven to be a deterent, except it most certainly deters the one you"re putting to death. I think even a better deterent would be to bring back chain gangs AND make the prisoners wear pink underwear. Imagine some family driving along and they see a chain gang with the prisoners wearing pink underwear. A little boy in the car asks his dad "why are those men chained up wearing pink underwear?" The father answers "son they committed a terrible crime and they have to spend the rest of their life like that. So I would suggest son that you never commit any crimes." I think that would be a real deterent and we would eventually be ahead of the Chinese...

Cant speak for anyone else Bob, but watching some bastard getting his brains blown out would be deterent enough for me.
(wont catch me sneaking into China)
Yes, and I am all for them (prisoners) earning thier keep via work gangs.
As it is I have spent years working outdoors, in conditions the "State" says is too harsh for criminals, just so I can pay my bills and feed my family. WTF !!! is that all about? They cant work outside when it's 105 in the shade, but I have to to feed them? What kind of idiot would think that arrangement is equitable?

yet another pet peeve lol, I got a lot of them.

Few, if any of the state prisons are even run by the state (of PA) anymore.

Most are run by Wackenhut. Yeah, sounds like a chocolate factory or something wonka wonka..

The sad reality is that since 1985, the per capita incarceration rate of americans has doubled.. And guess who lobbies our politicians for more mandatory minimum sentencing? Who lobbys against marajuana law reform? Yep.. wackenhut.

You will see in the new MM movie about capitalism how two PA judges SHUT DOWN state run juvenile detention centers, shipping the kids off to medium security wachenhut centers, and how those judges got MILLIONS from lobbyists for it.

Criminals are now corporate widgets. All they care about is units of measurment + days incarcerated = profit.

Keeping americans incarcerated is profitable, period. And we the taxpayer are paying CEO's and executives to do it.

We (as a society) are gravely sick, and getting worse. We've accepted a police state as normal.
