Anyone else bounce all over the map when writing?

I'm beginning to think I have musical ADHD. I seem to jump all over the map when it comes to genres/styles of music. Not that it's a bad thing, but I just wrote two completely different songs in the span of 3 days. One being a hard rock tune and the other a more coldplay/frayish type song. How on earth does that happen? Does this happen to anyone else?

Gotta love the beauty of music. The best outlet for emotion that I can think of.

Check out the tracks and let me know what you think. You'll see what I mean by complete polar opposites. They're posted on my profile here at bandmix and my myspace. First two songs on both.

Great sounding recordings. Don't Run Away is crying out for some lyrics and a powerful singer (Neanderpaul, Craig Maxim, fisherman bob?). Haven't got a singer lined up locally? Maybe it's time for some online collaboration...

Thanks for the kind feedback bob. I'm not gifted in the lyric/vocal department. I limit myself to backups on stage and that's it. I definitely need some collaboration from somewhere. And you hit it spot on the powerful singer. Pretty crazy how you can make a digital 8-track sound great huh? I'm too lazy to get into a computer based recording rig which kind of limits my recording abilities but I make do hehe.

I think I might be more 'all over the map' than even you...

actually these don't seem all that far apart to me...

believe it or not the songs on my myspace profile were picked specifically because they were closer in genre than anything else I've done.... and their still miles apart!

perhaps I see them as further apart than you would... maybe we just see our own work as being so far apart and when others listen they just don't see the distance... i dunno.

anywho, I liked it fwiw. nice and clean...

Mike I tried to check your myspace link but it was dead. The ones on your bandmix profile don't seem that far apart to me. I guess you're right, when we look at our own music it seems farther apart than when someone else hears it. Crazy right?

As soon as I started listening to Don't Run Away I started to think of vocalizations, not specific lyrics, but phrasings that work perfectly with the song. If I were you I'd start searching for a singer/songwriter. I mean a powerhouse singer/songwriter. It cries out for it my friend.

That's awesome bob. I plan on scouring the internet as well as san antonio to see what I can find as far as powerhouse lyricist/vocalists. Too bad they aren't a dime a dozen right?

I think it's normal for anyone who listens to a wide variety of music to also write that way as well. Absolutely normal.

And dude - I really like your stuff. Like Bob said, "Don't Run Away" cries out for some really powerful vocal work. But really, both songs do. I like 'em both. I don't think they're that far apart; I wouldn't have any problem putting both of those songs on the same album. Then again, I'm a Dream Theater fan...

You've got a really good ear for arrangement and creating ebb-and-flow, and making the pre-chorus and chorus sections powerful and emotional, just like they're supposed to be. I mean, I listen to that second song and I could totally hear that on my local rock radio station, stuck right between an Alter Bridge tune and a 3 Days Grace track.

I haven't heard Drowning Mona's music before but I've heard the name; would neither of these tracks work for that band you're in?

But hey - I can understand needing multiple outlets of expression :-)

Our singer just heard 8Sep09 today and said she was blown away. She said she'd start writing to it tonight. Drowning Mona is hard rock. I joined the band about 6 months ago after the guitarist quit. Since then we've written to 2 of my songs. Hopefully this 3rd one will light the fire....so to speak. Hehe

I agree.

Enjoyed the tracks brother! And I agree with Colors about your ear for arranging as well. Good stuff.

If those two tracks are indicative of your writing ability, then Drowning Mona needs to get all over that as a band and you guys will be FINE.

Honestly - some of the best stuff I've heard on Bandmix. Makes me want to (a) hear more and (b) inspires me to work on my own stuff.

Thanks bro, I really appreciate it! We're working on stuff as always. It's hard to find time between a day job and gigging. If you want to hear more of my stuff you can check out http://www.cptobvious.com There's about 40 some odd songs on there! I appreciate all the positive feedback. Glad I can inspire!

I just write what comes into my head.
