Linux recording

Has anyone here successfully recorded a quality music track on Linux at this point?

I've been using Linux for eons now (Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty). I'm considering installing the hardware I use on the Linux box. I've had some success with Linux, however 'Jack Audio' sometimes phases me. That said I've not had my hardware running with it.

Thoughts please.

Thanks.
Chippy.

CHIPPY , its time to upgrade, PC OR MAC, Cubase and Logic have gotten so much better its ridiculous. Get a new Mac book with Logic. $1000.
11 years ago I was working with 6 gig hard drives. I just deleted 15 gigs of trash.
I like Cubase because of the way they set up their sends and non destructive editing.
Recording is so much easier today. I did "spring breeze" as a rough track in about an hour.
Do yourself a favor and look into it because I have heard your creativity and that is excellent, but it can be very frustrating using difficult tools to make your musical point through recordings.
You brought it up,,, Now give me some good news.
If you do upgrade I can help you quite a bit. Talk to ya lata,EHRME. :)

Oh yeah I know Goingly. I have Cubase too but Windows just hogs the system. I have an old version of Cakewalk too.

Linux just works without hogging things. The real problem is "Jack Audio" Or maybe I didn't set it up right? (Perhaps). Actually my cousin is a Linux dev so perhaps I'll ask him too.

I've always built and maintained stuff myself, it's difficult for me to change that part of me know really.

Ah yes the sends.... LOL! :D

I'm still learning that part, hence nothing I have is mastered at all. Windows and my cubase tend to fall out. I have to close the system often, Defrag, delete, you name it. I don't have to do anything like that on Linux except dump the trash every now and again.

It's pretty powerful too. 2 Gigs Ram 80 Gig HD Serial ATA.

Also of course it could just be that your right and its too old for the job now. At the moment I am rewiring a headset to use as an acoustic mic for my guitar. hahahaha

Things change. I'm pretty optimistic that jobs will start coming my way again and then I'll go build a monster. Thanks by the way.

Keep well Goingly.

Chippy.

CHIPPY ITS TIME TO UPGRADE. Do you want to get your good musical ideas out or do you wan't to be a computer tech?
Sounds like you are dealing with all the problems of computer recording from 11 years ago no matter how fast or what you do to your computer.
Give up your old ways, upgrade, and then we can all enjoy your creative musical ideas.By the way that last peice caught me by suprise when that string line came in.COOL BEANZ.

Thanks Glen.
Cash flow problem at the moment. I'll be first in line ordering stuff just as soon as I find someone who thinks I have enough talent to work for them?

So Gong, what's the best and most affordable software for the PC?

I can put together PC's no problem. Just built my wife a new machine for $388. I'd like to get a dedicated machine for recording and use something better than Audacity.

Suggestions? What can I do for the least amount of money and still be happy?

Chris, COLORS, I don't know. The only problem I've had with logic and a mac is I don't use it enough.
The expensive stuff gets to be AD/DA converters. And good mics.
I still get blown away by RATS "testing two" because he did such a good job recording it, AND, thats major,,,,,,,that he did not and maybe worse could have destroyed that recording by adding any more.
You did a GREAT job recording. You also did a GREAT job of playing.
Unfortunately it is the outboard gear that that breaks the bank.
You ask for any help you got it . Thanx man.

CHIPPY , I had such a bad time with CAKEWALK I don't wan't to hear the name.
Even one of their "leading authorities" wrote that there were some known issues and that if anyone found new ones they would appreciate a heads up.
As far as reaper I have never seen it, but once again it raises compatability issues with the important outboard gear AD/DA converters.
I wasted to much money trying to work with programs that had little support for outboard gear. this also gets us into D.A.W. wich brings us closer to hands on.YA DONT NEED IT, if you're working in the computer.
Even worse are other programs that have nothing to do with music. We have a business program we "LICENSED" for $5000, and renew for $1500 a year. This was actually one of the better programs around. At least most music programs let you purchase them outright.
I know of one business owner that shelled out major bucks to have his own program developed. When you talk about some of the music programs available I have to say $500 for what you get is cheap.
I don't want to be a geek, I want to hook up a mic record and have it sound good. :)

Uh, I did tell you that that particular song was done on an old Yamaha 4-track cassette recorder with no frills, didn't I? It was my second attempt as "Testing One" was my first.

I do think your right Glen, truly. $500 would get you something worth using. I've tried a whole bunch of things but still come back to Cubase. I did try Reaper however and it looks good.

I think you did hit on something >>> AD/DA converters.
I'm midi/analogue and so far as I know either have worked just fine for me. I had a bleading problem in Cakewalk and channels, I got this sorted out however, it was my bad wiring. ;roll:

If you have $500 then I'd go Cubase each and every day. So I guess it's really down to what you are doing with the software right? If its just analogue then you'd be hard pressed to beat Audacity. (If not trying to be commercial).

Actually I run what I'm doing through several programs now. I find some easier than others for different things.

Good points Glen.
