I can't begin to pronounce this guy's name, but he's pretty good, & he's being touted as the next Vic Wooten. Dunno about all of that, but he is a great player.
What is that thing on his thumb?

He's incredible, but how can anybody say that he's better than Victor Wooten? I mean, this guy is great at the percussive stuff, but Wooten adds the melodic with it.

I quite agree, ratsass. I feel the same way about comparing Mark King to Wooten.

Does anyone know what that thing on his thumb is called? I'm prolly sounding lame, here, but I'd like to know. It doesn't look like tape, to me, but rather a strapped on thingie.

I can't view the video right now (at work), but I'll look at it when I get home tonight.
Phil, is it a solid piece covering his thumb, or something more like a banjo thumb pick? I actually use the same kind of thumb pick banjo players use when I play bass with a pick. Its more comfortable for me, and I don't drop the pick when my fingers fatigue.

I've seen something like the device on his thumb in the back pages of Bass Player. I think it's called a Slap Ring. I would call it a cheater ring. Nothing can take the place of good ol' callluses.

I dunno. Mayhaps Im doing it wrongly, but there are times when I try to slap that it irritates my thumb joint a bit. A "slap ring" might solve that lil prob.
Thanks, bigmac!
I ain't a slapper/popper guy, anyway, but I might try it out more if it didn't hurt.

No, but I'd like to try this thing out! The tone of the slapping from the website is bright and full, so I can see how this would be useful.
